Now, I've been having trouble with my pos ranger 2.9 tranny. It's 1988,
2wd, 5 speed, with a screwed up clutch. for the last couple months, the clutch gave me a hard time, and the tranny whined in 1,2,3, and 5. maybe reverse, i don't know. Then, the clutch started slipping for a while, on occasion.(only when warm) soon after it was going through fluid like a sob. Poor shifting(hard to get into gear) was next up. so I'm limping back and forth from school for like a week, and I end up stopping at a stop sign with no ability to get it in gear. I pump the clutch like a madman and put it to the floor. i push the shifter into what i thought was first with "enthusiasm", and WACK!! my hand hits the dash. with an exchanging of words i yank on the shifter trying to get it back to nuetral, with no availe. so i go to let out the clutch and call my dad to come pick me up, and cachunk, it stalls. hmm!... i fire it up again and soon realize i am in what appears to be 5th gear. fan friggin tastic... so i ride the clutch for 3 blocks at about 4 grand,(:D) doin' 25-30 kms an hour (ya I'm canadian no i dont kow bob from toronto) SO I need a new tranny. now, getting one for less than the price of my truck is less than a simple. I've managed to find a tranny near my house for a decent price of about 300 pulled, but im not sure if its right. now, i can see the difficulty of identifying the tranny without seeing it, but ill describe what im currently using to describe it. it has a round, ribbed design on the bottom as apposed to a flat plate found on a4ld or whatever. so, should you be able to decifer the info im trying to get across, its an M50D-R1. Now, would a tranny from a 1993 or maybe newer, fit into my ranger? its 5 speed. Or, if i could get a early 90's 3.0 or 4.0 aerostar, and swap in an auto? which would be the more reasonable choice? or, is it possible to install the the 4 or 5 speed from a 1987 or older 2.8? what equipment would i need for a a4ld swap from an aerostar would i need to get from a ranger only?
