I just found a logging trail on our property that I had forgotten about and a couple of us are going to wheel it. There's some trees in the way that we're going to cut up and there's some nasty stumps that need to be addressed. What's the best way to clear a trail stump? Cut it short as possible with the chainsaw?

I would cut them as short as possible of you arent able to pull them out. If they arent monstrous stumps and the ground is soft enough you shouldnt have a problem.

Why clear perfectly good obstacles out of your way? I'd find a good line past it!

each one of those stumps is a party in the making.

invite your buddies over, give them a shovel or a pick axe and dig out around the stump. drill a bunch of holes into the stump at least an inch wide. pour gas into the holes and leave it for an hour. during that hour, go to the store and get a shit load of beer. then, go back to the stump and light that sucker on fire. the gas should've absorbed enough that it'll burn for a little while. continue nightly until all stumps have been cleared.

lastly, go F a goat, you have so much property that you FORGOT about a logging trail????? lol, JEALOUS

i know, right?

burning shit = win
hanging out with your buddies=win
beer=win
being in the woods=win

Rip it out with a big chain, and a bigger truck... If you dont have a big enough truck, then digging around it and chopping some of the bigger roots with a chainsaw should allow you to do the trick with a smaller truck.

I dont really advise burning the stump in place, smouldering roots can last a freakishly long time underground and start up ground fires when the weather gets nicer in a few weeks/months... That is if its not already dry enough to start ground fires.

Alternatively, cut them down with a chainsaw, and if you can't get your trucks past them at that point, you either need a bigger truck or a bigger chain saw.

I wouldn't worry about the larger stumps too much, those are just "trail Features" :icon_twisted:

The smaller "tire killers" (4" and under) make those gone anyway you can!

Yup, If the stumps are too tall you may have to trim them down a little. Maybe even cut steps into the stumps. Awesome trail features!!!

I love this idea! Haha my winch will probably wind up doing all the work though

And its a narrow little trail just wide enough for a skidder, it got logged 2 years ago and I never thought about it until me and a buddy were walking the woods across the street. It's all marsh. About 40 acres worth

That's the problem, they're mostly "tire killers" the stumps and the random brush left to minimize ruts with the skidder

Well, the BEST, but not necessarily (actually DEFINITELY not) the cheapest way is to hire a guy with a stump grinder...
