ok , i was browsing my summit catalog the other day and i wound up in the mustang/ford section , my truck has a 7.5'' open diff with 3.73 gears , in the catalog i can get a factory trac-lok for a 7.5'' with 28 spline axles , do you think i should get it , will it fit my ranger ?

thanks in advance for input

i have a 7.5 rear end with a trac lock with 4.56 for sale but i think its like an inch narrower than urs and no abs cause it came out of an 85

For the price of a trac-lok and shop labor, just pick up a Powertrax no-slip system. You can save because the ease of installation, it handles better on the road than the cheaper lock-right version, and there won't be any one wheel slip.

see , i just eant to get the trac-lok set up and put my ring gear on it , the trac-lok out of summit is just a bare assembly with no ring gear , which i why i was contemplating it , i can put my ring gear on it and slap it in

well i will install it myself , i aint goin to college to be a mechanic for nothin , and there is a reason i have about $6000 worth of snap-on , mac , and craftsman tools

why is the Powertrax any easier to install than the trac-lok? does the Powertrax cost anymore?

Its not a "slap on" affair.

well i know that , you have to remove both rear wheels , dtums , diff cover , c-clips , remove the shafts , remove the carrier assembly and bearings , swap the ring gear , then reverse the procedure , i know it takes a little while

Because it only replaces the spider gears instead of the carrier which requires swapping the ring gear and setting the backlash and carrier bearing pre-load. A no slip will set you back around $400, Lock-right around $275 and $260ish for an aussie. A trac lock can range from $100-$250ish from what I've seen.

IMHO the trac-lok is inferior if your truck is going to see any off-road time.

Just remember to set pinion backlash (.008-.015" I believe) or it won't last long.

It's just backlash, not pinion backlash. I'd measure it before hand so you can set it where it was before to keep the gears on the same pattern.
Hahns, is there an Aussie locker for the 7.5"?
No, but you can get a lock-right but they're spendy ($400ish). I'd sell you my old one but it's trashed.

im going to regear my truck. ive heard if you want to install a l/s or locker you should do it at the same time because it wont be cost anymore in labor. would this be true for the powertrax? im looking at the powertrax traction system on their site, is this their l/s? you mentioned the no slip, are you refering to the lock right? i want better traction on a boat ramp without sacrificing driveability .

well my main thing here is cost , and how does one measre backlash , and my truck is , i hate to say it , a 4wd street truck , it sees some off-road use , but not much

No, the lock-right isn't recommended for the street. It has a tendency to pop and bang during turns with throttle changes. Go to summitracing.com and look up part number PWT-92-0675-2805 The no slip can be installed without removing the carrier or gears.

For application an LS might be better, the No-slip is a smoother version of the lock-right.

You use a dial indicator on the outside of the ring gear tooth to measure the backlash. Driveability is in the eye of the beholder, up until I broke my 7.5 my rig saw 1000 miles a month with a locked rear and I didn't mind it. They have a couple quirks that you get used to and best of all off-road they wont disappoint. Basically they lock under sufficient throttle and under no/light throttle they unlock, I never noticed any extra tire wear and I purposely kept mine locked around corners more than I should have. They aren't noisy at all, you can hear a light click if you're turning slow in a parking lot with the windows down. I've never been impressed with a clutch type LS off-road so this is just my opinion.

Mine never popped or banged, at least not until it's last month of life, it's failure was caused by my abuse and running an engine and tires the 7.5 was never designed for.
