If it aint broke, give it more gas!
I am in the process of replacing the spider gears in my 98 Ranger with the 28 spline 8.8 in trac lock diff. Had one gear with a broken tooth. Amazingly, there was no other damage to it. Carrier bearings and cups were pristine. And the ring and pinion are also in great shape with no visible issues of any kind. The outer bearings were pitted and I am replacing them with repair bearings. The question is this. When I removed the axles , I noticed o-rings where the c clips go. How critical are the o-rings. One of them was broken . I don't have any and I just got the spider gear kit and am getting ready to re-assemble the thing. Any thoughts?

Well, I can't remember ever seeing o-rings in there.

Were they in place of the C-clips, or in addition to?

The o-rings don't seal anything, they seem to be there to keep a little tension on the c-clips. As for the bearings, if the outer races are bad, the bearing is also bad. hth
