I put a limited slip differential in my truck and was looking for the best oil to add to the axle. Will 90-w with a friction modifier be good enough. I bought a used l/s carrier and 3.73 ring and pinion and have it dialed in pretty good preload, run out and gear pattern but didnt put new clutches in until I see how well it performs. Any input appreciated.

I have a gallon of volvo penta 75w90 synthetic I was thinking of putting in the axle. Is the additive necessary if you use a high performance sync?

It should say on it if you need to add friction modifier or not.

75/80w90 will be fine.

Either run 80w-90 with 4oz of Motorcraft friction mod (like 5 bucks at the dealer) or run 75w-140 synthetic with no friction mod.

Putting a used Trac-Lok in is about as useful as tits on a boar.

Either put new clutches in or a locker. There is a article in the tech library about using extra clutches to stiffen up the Trac Lok.

I noticed the Valvoline 80W-90 says "for limited slip" right on the bottle. I assume that means no friction modifier is necessary for it either.

I run it to be safe. I even run it with my locker.

I'm not claiming to know anything.... but it seems to me that somewhere I've heard or read that too much is a bad thing. Is that true?

It grips harder if you run too much. It will grip then slip then grab again.

It will grip less if you run too much....

Got this from Valvoline's website:

Valvoline High Performance Gear Oils meet or exceed API Services GL-5 and GL-4*. The inclusion of Limited Slip Friction Modifier in this product makes it unnecessary to add additional friction modifier (Ford M2C118A, Chrysler MS-5630, or GM1052358) in most vehicles.

On a side note, down at the bottom it mentions a Valvoline Syncromesh for manual transmissions was released in September..... might need to give that a whirl.

Well I should have gone with my first instinct. The clutches are shot time to break it back down. I can spin one wheel by hand with the other on the ground in neutral with little resistance. I kind of expected it just got in a hurry before the rain sets in. Will it hurt to run it like it is until I get new spiders and clutches together its basically just a open carrier as it is. Oh well live and learn the school of hard knocks

You are correct.....I am an idiot.lol I described exactly what a Trac lok does with straight gear oil.

I just got the clutch set for my 7.5 trac-loc. I got 6 steels and 8 frictions is there any particular order that works the best. I will pull the carrier out tomorrow and remove the ring gear to get the spring out any advice on setting up the clutch packs would be appreciated.
