ok. so i am a high school student that has a 1993 Ford ranger XLT 4.0 4x4. I love the power from my 4l engine, but i would love to do an engine swap to the toyota 3L turbo diesel. With school its hard to really save enough money to do that, but im trying for it anyways.

So tell me what yall think.

What diesel is the 3.0l? Is that one of the "B" engine?

I think it would be ridiculously hard... UNLESS you decide to go with an all Landcruiser drivetrain... I was thinking about a 1HZ/1HD-T complete drivetrain and 80 series SAS... You would have to use LC axles because of Toyota's offset differential thing in the rear and pass side drop in the front, or figure some way of making an adapter between your engine and common American transmission (ZF 5-speed maybe?)... I don't see though why you would want to go from something you can get parts to something you can't... If it's just for the fact of it being a dieselthen GM's 6.2/6.5 is a MUCH better/easier mill to swap in...

yea. the 3.0 and 5.0 are "b" engines.

yea, i understand that it would be difficult. also after looking through for just the engine i realized that i would have to fab. a housing around the turbo to keep dirt and stuff out when i go muddin. Um...i didnt think of GM 6.2/6.5. thank you. I will definitely look into that.

Why diesel?

Drop in a good heathly 351. Or a 300 I6 with some high gears if your after mileage.

.....if your driving a backhoe.

Because a diesel is cooler...

a diesel is cooler, and i looked into the GM 6.2/6.5, and that definitely wont fit in the engine bay without major modifications.

the only problem im haveing aat the moment is finding a 2.4 2LT diesel motor.
if anyone knows where i could buy one please let me know.

Sure it will... Ask bobbywalter, he has a GM 6.2 in his Ranger... Good luck finding any Toy diesel, and once you do I hope you have the money, the ones I've found are much more expensive than any domestic diesel....

I know alot of toyota forklifts use them.

A whooping 72HP and like 110ftlbs of torque.

I dont see the point...changing the whole fuel system over, finding/buying a diesel, the added cost of matience and fuel, etc etc.

A good 351W can be pickid up at almost any boneyard cheap.

I actually agree with this... The only Toy diesel I see being suitable for transplant would be a 1HD-T, ~180hp up to 200ish for the 1HD-FTE electronic model... Maybe a 13B-T they make around 160 hp IIRC, good luck finding either of those in the states though, and expect to pay out the wazzoo for one from Japan...

I agree with Beanmachine, I have to admit, Diesel is pretty badass, when I see a big ass diesel truck with stacks blowin out thick clouds of black smoke, It always amuses me. Take my dad's 7.3 L Powerstroke Ford F250 for example, His is on an 8 inch lift with 35's, my dads a diesel technician, so he has his diesel all rigged up with all the goodies, and I mean everything, (Chip, Turbo, Module/Tuner, Stacks, CAI, etc.). Its badass. As For putting a diesel in a ranger, I would stick with sumthin that you can find in the states. I wuld probably look into that Cummin's 4 banger diesel engine, I think its like a 3.4 or a 3.9 L engine (can't remeber exactly which one, srry), and it is said to put out around 170 - 190 horses, and upwards of 300 ft lbs of torque, If that ain't pretty badass on a ranger, I don't what is (Besides a V8 swap). You can't go wrong with a Cummin's, my Uncle's got a 1996 Dodge with the old skool 12 valve 5.9 L Cummin's in it, and hes got nearly 650,000 miles on it, and it stills runs like a champ, and for one thing, its a 5 speed manual, ive gotten to drive it, its a fun truck to drive. It hauls ass too.

Toyota diesel very very very expensive. 4.5L I6 from FJ80 is getting easier to find.

FJ80 SAS not as hard as you think......... and you can get an adapter to run GM transfer case behind the LandCruiser transmission...... for that matter you can get a bell adapter that allows you to run a LandCruiser engine in front of a GM transmission.

...high school student...i would love to do an engine swap to the toyota 3L turbo diesel...

I see this as it ain't gonna happen... If I were going to do anything I'd do one of the I6 gas motors and keep all the LC stuff and do 80's series SAS... If I ever run across an old 80 series cruiser that's cheap it'd be neat to try...

how cheap....... i just passed on a wrecked one in Ohio that the guy only wanted $950 for. Its gone now but thats about what totaled ones go for.

That's not bad... I'd a picked it up... People around here think they are worth their weight in gold... I looked at buying a beat up, rusty, shot to hell FJ60 for almost $5000... An 80 series that drives never goes below 8 or 9 grand... That's along with everything though... An explorer with a bad trans and blown HG I couldn't get for less than $3000, a Trooper with a seized engine they wanted $4000 for... This area is nuts...
