i've just got a truck toolbox now i'm curious as to what the top ten tools you guys would need/really want on the road or on the trail? hope for some good responses

Recovery equipment for the trail. A good mechanic's tool set for the road. With a trolley jack (floor jacks are too big, stock jacks take fricken' forever and don't work well unless on flat pavement).

Technically, every socket is a tool, so it's kinda silly to list the "top 10."

a qt of oil, a gallon of water, adjustable wrench, slotted screwdriver, a 4"x4"x1' block of wood, electical tape, duct tape.

You could get away with just a socket set on one of those bar things and count it as one. and those stock jacks only work with the stock truck because mine doesn't work anymore with my 31's, although I still keep it just in case.

I would go with a small tool box with all of the wrenches you use when doing normal maintance, like for sparkplugs, lug nuts, ect. I find that almost anything i want to take apart is metric from 10mm to 19mm. the ony other thing would be a cell phone and longrange radio.

Yours look like its a street truck I might suggest a pocket bike with some gas to carry in the bed.

Who's? Because i just listed mine in the wrong area and haven't changed it yet so i hope it ain't mine if it is oh well but i do like the pocket bike idea

FYI, I have 31s on an Exploder, and have used the stock jack in a pinch. It works just fine, but I wouldn't want to try it on the trail.

Top 10 wow, umm... I keep enough tools to wire a house, and pull the motor and/or trans out of a Festiva (ask how I know), plus an old ammo box with my tow strap and D rings, an old ammo box with tie downs , a tarp, cargo ''bed net'', and a jerry can. Humm I think I need to take some stuff out...

most of mine have been listed, but don't forget booster cables!

but ya:
1. tow rope/strap
2. sockets (i got a set that comes with pliers and wrenchers) breaker bar is good too.
3. booster cables
4. axe/saw
5. knife
6. jack (don't have one though...)
7. tarp, bungee cords, bed net
8. rope
9. tape: electrical, duck, and tuck, its all good.
10. rum - if the above 9 fail....

I stopped keeping a tool box in the bed of my pickup. I was always having to take it out to make room for stuff--and never used anything out of it anyway. I don't even carry a spare tire or jack. I've never had a flat on a Load Range E tire before.

Going on a trip I carry the usual assortment to handle whatever thing might need replaced--within reason. I'm not going to rebuild something major on the road though. I'm not pulling out an engine. A bed box is way more space than I need. WOuld be nice to have a side box like those 70's ford pickups had. A place that won't interfer with the cargo room and is large enough for a few things you might need.

1. Jumpers
2. Better Lug Wrench
3. Chains and Shackles
4. Knife
5. Mechanics Gloves
6. Couple of Screw Drivers
7. Small Socket Set
8. Good set of Pump Pliers
9. Decent Jack and Come Along
10. A $20 bill.... just in case

I got a bunch of other crap behind my seats. I have an extended cab and I don't have those stupid midget seats in back. I got a 3 drawer craftsmen full of odds and ends.

yeah, that's a good selection there cr, but one question, do you have that tool box tied-down/secured somehow? big heavy stuff like that makes me nervous in the cab...

Nah, amazingly it does pretty well. All the drawers on the box lock when the top lid is down and it fits nicely behind my seat so it keeps its place well. It's a good little box, keep all my metric in one drawer and all the standard tools in the other.

those are all pretty good and most of what i would say is up there except a flashlight and a med kit. i carry a 3million candle power light with DC charger in case i need to light up a small village, and i also carry a 21 LED hand held one that lasts for ages. for a medical kit. just enough to disinfect, wrap, sling, stitch ect is mandatory.

I dont carry much with me anymore, theres just no room. I have a jug of water in the bed due to a leaky radiator, flashlight, sometimes I have a knife, and cookies in the glove box...

When I had my Long bed 91 Ranger with the the bed box I had a few bottles of water in there, an ax, a tow strap, a 4 way, a shovel, rags, assorted nuts and bolts at the bottom of the box, an aluminum bat filled with cement, bungee cords, Rope, 2 buckets, a 1/4 trowel, 1/2 trowel, a margin trowel, 2 grout floats, a box cutter... i think thats it lol and of course i had my trusty Mag light in the cab, a knife, a tire iron under the drivers seat, and a 4 way screw driver.
