Todays weather

Well, power was restored at work 5 minutes before I walked out for the night. Power at home, however…. I passed a lot of downed trees and lines just down the road. It might be a while.

checked the house and yard. I have a few sections of privacy fence down. Grill and griddle were overturned on the back porch. One rocker upside down on the front porch. Not bad. Fired up a Coleman lantern and stove. Heated leftover potatoes from last night and made a batch of scrambled eggs with cheese. Life is good. I took pictures. But they’re on my personal phone which is giving me a “emergency calls only” message. Must be a problem with Verizon in my neighborhood.

mom lives about 3 miles away. She’s ok. Says she doesn’t need anything. She said a neighbor loaned her a flashlight. I said “Mom. What about that square led light magnetically stuck to your refrigerator?” She looked and it was there. She always has a million batteries on hand. How old are they? Nobody knows. But this will be a good time to use them up. She always used to have candles around, too. I gotta keep an eye on her.

some of you guys met my high school, buddy Paul at the truck nationals. He’s been following the weather too, and when I sent them the all clear, he sent me this.

I bought a bluetti 'solar generator' awhile back to power a 12v fridge for camping or whatever... but where it really paid its dues was during a couple power outages last year when I wasn't at home with the 'real' generator.

Money well spent, for sure.

Actually sold the one I bought to the new guy at work a couple weeks back.. now im waiting for black Friday to roll around so I can buy the next step up 👍

I actually have a solar panel system with battery backup on my house. For some reason, it didn’t transfer automatically. When I started taking covers off to troubleshoot this evening, I found a manual switch. Click. Problem solved. I have 6 circuits tied to it. Refrigerator, chest freezer, lights and ceiling fans in bedrooms and bathrooms. I’m set up pretty good.

Its been windy & raining most of the day here, nothing destructive like some of you others have been going through. I do have a generator in case of power loss, its not big enough to power everything but it will keep a few things going if needed. Looks like not much will change over the next few days.

I think it's more of a social media problem. Back before facebook and the like people around here would treat what we had today as just another storm and prepare as such. Now people are exposed to all the fear, doom, and gloom spread on social media and think that they need to rush out and prepare for the end of the world at the first sign of rain.
Social media, mass media pushing hysteria, and people just being plain dumb anymore…

I always thought of that as more of a hole-up-for-awhile winter storm thing.

You may not lose power but you won't be going out to get anything for awhile.
That too. Any sort of crisis where the local store and power may be optional. My brother moved to near DC, and one fine winter day where they got like an inch and a half of snow, being from PA, my brother put a light jacket on and his flip flops and in his shorts walked across to the local Whole Foods to find that they were closed because of the snow… Good thing he also knew to be prepared with food at home so it was a minor inconvenience rather than a real problem.

I just zip the top off with a P-38 and rig the can over a candle.

Viennas, saltines and beer and now you have a four course meal of the highest epicurean standard (by said candle light, no less; china and linen are optional).

After all, are we not barbarians?
Well, yeah, I mean, isn’t that how anyone would do things? I haven’t done the candle thing in years because mom didn’t like candles. I usually have 4 or 5 of the 20# propane “grill” tanks around and usually try to keep them nearly all full since that’s what my grills run on, my camp stove, and my beer brewing stuff. The beer brewing uses about half a tank in one batch, so it’s kinda thirsty, but the cooking stuff just kinda sips at the tanks. I got into doing a lot of cooking on my tailgate (lunches at work and a lot of just because I can cooking), so I’m just used to thinking propane over candle.

Still raining. Made it through the high winds. They actually canceled the concert yesterday. I wasn't too sad. Had no desire to stand in the rain all day. It's supposed to clear up before noon today here. With the occasional shower.

Power came back at home around 4:30am. Not bad considering all the damage nearby. The road I live on is still one lane with trees and power lines down about 1/2 mile from here. No traffic lights anywhere. So traffic is snarled at all the intersections.
I took half a day off so I can get my fence out of the neighbors yard. Not going to buy lumber to fix a privacy fence right now. I’ll put up some wire fencing I have and wait for prices to get back to normal later. Livvy will enjoy seeing the neighbors through the wire.

A sort of update, mostly a wake up call

I’m feeling rather embarrassed and guilty this morning. I got a lot of rain, but I’m not aware anything was damaged. The power outage was an inconvenience at most.

When my power came on, I watched an old movie just to relax. Then I went to my usual condition of having the news on in the background as I did other things.

I slowly caught on that a lot of people were hit up whole lot harder than I was. That caused me to actually sit down and flip to some local channels, all of which were reporting devastation around the area.

I was serious when I put my prayer message up yesterday, but last night I returned to prayer for those less fortunate. Flooding in the area was apparently extreme, one house actually floating away with the flood. It was actually the first ever flash flood emergency in Atlanta.

Lord, forgive my arrogance, and I pray again for all those affected. Before I tackle my own issues, I’m going to make a few calls to see if there’s anyway I could help. I posted before that, when I was hit by the tornado in 98, people showed up out of nowhere to help. I say nowhere, but they came from a local church. They helped me regroup all day, and that went on for several weeks on the weekend. To this day, I don’t know who the people were on that first day. I would be honored to be one of those anonymous people for someone in need right now. At this point, I might just be in the way, but I’ll go check, and at a minimum I will write a couple checks. Red Cross being number one.

Say a prayer folks, maybe say too.

Fence should be good enough for a few months. I need to save up and replace a lot more than the 32 feet that fell down.
