TK5 to M5OD

gotcha.

What I need right now is a used 2x4 TK5. (or an M5OD if I can swap them)

I also need to rebuild a 4x4 TK5. (different story all together)

If I can use a 4x4 TK5 (but switch the tailhousings with a 2x4) then that would work and would open up my search field a little. End result is I have a 2x4 Ranger that can't be driven until I replace the transmission. Whatever solves the problem will be good.

Two different trucks, two different trannies, same manufacturers, same years. Sorry if I am getting confusing. :icon_cheers:

you have me a bit confused on the 2wd or 4wd as well. but..

on my 86, i had a tk5 4x4 with a 1350 manual transfercase.

i swapped a m50d out of a 98 explorer (2wd). all i did was mate my 1350 up to the m50d (bolted right up) then i had to move the tranny xmember back. but the holes are already drilled on the frame for it, easy job. i cut the hole in the floorboard a bit to fit the new shifter, and i used a compression fitting to mate the m50d clutch line to the b2 clutch line. been working for years that way. just make sure its away from the exhaust mani and such.

the speedo and such will bolt right up. i did need different driveshafts front and rear since i the tranny is a different length (longer i think it was?)

and the m50d can be out of a 2.3/2.9/4.0. they are the same minus a slight difference in first gear on the 2.3 i believe. i'm sure someone will post up a bit for ya

search my name with m50d and i think you will find quite a bit

I have an 86 2wd ranger with the TK5. I need a 2wd transmission. If I find a junkyard 4wd TK5, can I remove the 4x4 tailhousing and replace it with the tailhousing of my 2wd TK5, thereby ending up with a working 2x4.

I think I am going to have fun with this.

Thanks for the M5OD info. That's what I was looking for.....shorter driveshaft, different shifter, bolts straight up to the engine, etc.....

My 86 Bronco II also has the TK5 and needs a rebuild, but is not a part of the equation right now.

gotcha!

i'd think its the same, since my m50d was 2wd and i took off the tail housing and bolted my 1350 transfer case to it. it should work the other way around as well!

make sure to read up on what fluid to use in the m50d. iirc its ATF. even tho is a 5spd.

and do it right the first time, replace the slave cylinder and such while your there. i had to do it twice... :nono:

I already bought a slave for a TK5 (and flywheel, clutch kit, rear main, etc). I don't think they are the same. If I can find a TK5 I will use that. Just easier. If I can't find one that seems to be worth a damn, then I will look further into the M5OD.
