I have a 1986 2wd ranger with the 5 speed tk5. What would it entail to replace that trany with a newer M5OD? Different driveshaft? Shifter assembly? Wiring connections? Different Clutch/slave components?

Any info would be appreciated.

Is this another AllanD question? Or just too dumb to respond to........

like a 90 or 91? I thought they were fairly interchangeable until the most recent model years.

But I guess that is why I threw the question out there. I really don't know.....

I'm pretty sure the only thing you'd need is a new slave and the right kind of connector on the hydraulic line. I don't know the lengths of either one (but I have both, so I may be un-lazy tomorrow and measure them)

If you get a M5OD, you'll definitely need to make sure you get the shifter with it. Otherwise you'll get nowhere.

Also, I don't think the wiring will be an issue. But since I have both transmissions, I'll check that sometime tomorrow if I can remember to.

The one thing you WILL have to do is get the RIGHT M5OD. TK transmissions have the removable bellhousing and the M5 is a one piece case w/ built in bellhousing. If you have a 4 cylinder, get a 4 cylinder one. If you have a 2.9, get a 2.9 or a 4.0 one. Those are the exact same bellhousing pattern.

I have the 2.9.

How easy is it to switch the tailhousings? For example, take a good 4x4 TK5 and swap the tail housing from a 2wd TK5.

I am trying to find all of my options before I start spending money.

You have a TK5 with a 4x4 tailhousing? I didn't think Ford ever used that transmission in the 4wd application. I thought it was all about the FM145 and such.

I've never swapped tailhousings, but I'm sure the only things you need are the tranny case seal and output shaft seal.

Someone else please chime in on that...

I do have a 4x4 TK5. It is in my BII right now. That is not the one I want to use though. I just figured it would open up used possibilities if I didn't HAVE to find a 2wd model.

I say just hit up a junkyard for a 2.9 or 4.0 M5OD and swap it over.

You should be able to find one out of a 4wd model. That way you shouldn't have to swap out much of anything except the transmission and shifter.

are you saying to find a 4x4 M5OD and put the 2x4 TK5 tailhousing on it?

Hmm. I really like the Tk5 tranny. i drove acouple of rangers that have it and i like the short throw it has, and the looseness, i guess you could call it. wish i had a Tk5 in mine.

I like mine as well. They just need to be rebuilt. They are old and tired.

I'm starting to get really confused... Are you wanting/needing a 2wd or 4wd transmission?

Whichever the case, if you're looking for a 4wd M5OD, then look for one out of a 2.9 or 4.0.

If you're looking for a 2wd M5OD, then obviously look for one out of a 2wd truck.

I don't think the TK5 and M5OD have the same tailhousing bolt pattern EXCEPT for where they bolt to the transfer case.
