Set the keyway at 12 o'clock with all the marks aligned, wrap the belt along the driver's side putting your slack at the tensioner. If all marks line up, rotate the crank 2 times, if they line up again your done, put it all back together.

So that was the 7th time that I have timed that engine. I think it my be the distributor vacuum advance so I am going to warranty it out at Orielly's tomorrow. All the parts around to motor are new so I do not know what to do after the distributor tomorrow.

Ok I replaced he distributor and nothing changed.it still bucks at constant speeds and still has a lack of power I am at a loss like I said every part around the engine is new excep the alternator and tranny. The weber carb is only 10 months old. I am at a loss and do not know what to do PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Well, if your sure you have the cam timing correct the only thing that comes to mind that would be a weak coil, have you tested or replaced??

Well, I replied in your other thread but not sure if you saw that...

When you set the timing, the vac line to the distributor should be disconnected and plugged...if you did that and it is still bucking check to make sure the dist is pointing to the number one plug...if not you can pull it up and reseat it till it does.

I did remove and plug the vac I will take the cap off and check to make sure the rotor is lining up.

OK...

In your picture of the crank, you have the timing mark set to about 8* BTDC...this is not where it should be when you are putting the belt on and lining up the marks...the crank notch should be aligned with the mark on the distributor gear...the rotor should be pointing to #1 piston...

If not, that's when you would remove the distributor and adjust it if needed.

When setting the timing, adjust the position of 8* BTDC by turning the distributor with the vac line disconnected while the engine is running. If it won't idle or run properly, slightly adjust the distributor clockwise and try to start the engine.

The timing should read about 8* BTDC at that point. Reconnect the vac line to the distributor and rev the engine. If it bogs or bucks or idles too low, you can then turn the distributor (typically counter clockwise) to fine tune it from there. But with the vac line connected, it will read about 20 to 30* BTDC. That's OK.

Going to bring it to a friend who is a mechanic. I am lost everything looks fine to me but still not right.

Hope he can figure it out...but I would say your crank is set incorrectly by the image you posted...

I've set the timing on mine about ten times now and it has never failed to work properly by doing it in that manner...the cam is in the correct position...the crank is out by about 15 points when you actually point it to the marks on the plastic cover...that cover is for timing the engine when it is running and using a timing light...

Anyway...hope it works out for you...:icon_thumby:

Ok I feel like an idiot t was the timing, even though I fooled with it seven times, but it runs great now!! He showed me how he checked TDC with a screw driver and how he jumped one tooth on the timing belt with a 1/4" drive extension. Thanks guys for your help.

Good news! Thanks for the update Dan...and now you (should) know how to fix it if you ever have to tear it apart again...hopefully not...should last you another 300,000 miles if you change the oil and keep it tuned up...hmmmm...maybe a good present for your first born to take over...:)
