timing noob problems

ok. i think i got it. i'm heading to the lake now, i'll leave it in the garage till i'm back

WOW. what a difference. changed my timing to 12 and it runs better than ever! no sputtering, no hesitation, sounds better and smoother at idle!

for reference....
the spout connector comes off the TFI harness about 6in from the distributor/TFI module. on my 86 b2 its white, and on any RBV it should have a "cap" on it.

the way to loosen the distibutor is with a 1/2 ratchet. i used a 1/4in with a deep socket. and be carful when tightening it back up, mine moved and changed my timing twice! so if you have an extra person around it could help!

so first thing I dont think you can time it properly off the coil you need to get a timing light with the clamp for the #1 plug wire you can go to any swap shop or craigs list or even buy a cheap one at the parts store or walmart nothing fancy but the most expensive the better. Yea get your face up close to read the numbers and assure the mark you are using is correct dont assume and are you using the pointer not the round thing. depending on the age of the damper will effect the timing also for ford engines especially with the work done take it where it knocks under a load then retard it back just to where it dont it might take a few times on the road at higher rpms to get it dialed in get it to knock then back it off then pull the spout and put it on the light and make the mark there for future reference. Max advance works best on older fords even the factory specs just get you close new wires cap rotor are always a plus and yea get a real timing light a must for any shade tree mechanic

You can check it by unplugging the knock sensor the engine should knock under a load

i learned to use the number one spark wire, and yes that is how my timing light is made to work.
