Long story short, I had to replace the timing gear in my 2.8 V6. Because I couldn't find one locally I bought a Cloyes timing gear set. The set I bought was not labled as a "noisy" set and they are helical cut. Regardless, the is a fairly audible whine.

Is this normal? Do you think the noise will go away once the new gear breaks in? The new gear has aluminum teeth vs. the plastic teeth of the old one.

They will get better but will never be as quiet as the nylon gears, did your cam shaft have alot end play in it this will add to the noise, as well as worn crank thrust bearing
