This 2019 Ford Ranger FX4 has an open front differential

welds can save weight. a robot can do it. bolts have heads that stick up, so welds eliminate that. welds are easier to balance if needed. less machining, no holes and threads. its faster.

just a few. but i could be wrong on all lol

Sounds about right.

I wonder why they didn't switch to this method decades ago.

A google search says they can lose almost a kilo of rotating mass and unsprung weight by doing that. I see no other advantage other than a guy can’t screw up the bolt torque during assembly.

Because it is much more expensive to repair and most trucks have more than one ratio for an option.

Well, it looks like either one needs to get in good with a machine shop or do a complete carrier swap if they every want to regear...

With no gear options I wonder how easy a regear is to reprogram...

if someone tried to weld this at home or in a shop they will end up destroying the gear. Its hard enough to get the weld right with the laser welder, too much heat will make the gear too brittle.

Yes....

This 2019 Ford Ranger has a locking rear differential, but the front differential is open. It's not even a limited slip. It appears the only option for the rear in any Ranger is an open differential, or a locking differential.

My 2010 Ford F-350 FX4 Super Duty had front and rear Trac-Lok (limited slip) differentials, and I really expected the same or more on a 2019 Ranger. My Super Duty felt like it had front and rear lockers when you took it off-road in 4WD.

F150 is the same. As far as I know, so are the SuperDuties.

I count 10 bolts, not the required 8. of course the pic may be just a typical representation.

Could be. Not sure. Certainly worth checking out before ordering.

FX4 isn't what it used to be. No longer a stand alone trim, only a package.
