thermostat housing leak again

I had to replace the housing on mine. It was warped or something... gaskets could not fix it for very long.

And now I have to replace either the gasket or the housing again... wtf? Could there be another problem with my t-stat housing?

Yes, I realize that I quoted myself.

i dont know if someone else mentioned this, i didnt read the other posts. if you use the silicon gasket maker, you apply it to whatever you wanna seal, hand tighten the bolts and let it dry for 30-45 mins. then go back and tighten them down and the sealant will be a little thicker than if you torque them down before it dries.

I'll give that a try.

I had it done for me, last time. This time I'm going to tackle it myself.

I use permatex high temp rtv silicone
Use for valve covers, oil pans, timing covers, water pumps, thermostat housings and transmission pans.
resist to -65 to 650 degrees and shop fluids.

I do not love the sheets of gasket . I hate to die

I dont know if you actually hit this point, but there is a rubber o ring AND a gasket, you need both. also if you top 2 inch hose is not pushed on all the way (over the little ridge) then it will leak at the hose and look like its leaking at the t-stat.

On my '93 4.0 there was NOT a factory gasket. Just the o-ring. On mine when it leaked at the hose, the fan blew the coolant back over the fuel regulator and I didn't notice the leak right away.

Ditto for Sholzy. I am in the process of redoing my valve cover gaskets/ lower intake gaskets on my 97. just the O ring. I will get pictures tonight if you want.

Something to consider, the thermostat goes in one way, and if you have it turned, it will not seat properly. there is a little jiggle valve that needs to be at the top of the housing to fit into the notch.

yes their is definately not a gasket on the 4.0 for the thermostat housing, just the rubber O ring around the physical thermostat. I was a little surprised myself but i took my old one out and put the new one in just like the old one came out and it hasn't leaked 1 drop...sorry to hear about your problems and hope you get it figured out.

The 4.0 uses a Thermostat with a slotted O-ring that you put on the outside diameter of the T-stat.

I actually smear my T-stat gasket with silicone grease.

If I had to resort to sealant to keep my t-stat from leaking I'd replace the t-stat housing first and if it still leaked I'd start cleaning up a lower intake manifold and pull
lower intake gasket set off the shelf...
