Talking about Redline, Amsoil, and Royal Purple.

I am shopping for Synthetic GL-4 80w 90 manual transmission oil.

I got a few choices, Redline MT90, Max-Gear, and Amsoil's Gear Lube 75W-90.

The main reason I would like to change to synthetic is for cold weather shifting. I would have liked to purchase from a Major brand, Penzoil, Valvoline, Halvoline, Mobil 1, etc. But all their synthetics are GL-5's.

So I am just wondering why the Major brands don't produce a good synthetic GL-4 lube?

Do you have any preferences between Redline, Royal Purple, and Amsoil, anyone used these lubes?

yeah i second that royal purple is awesome ive got it in my differentials now and when the oil change comes around again its going in the engine too

I vouch for Royal Purple as I have been using their products through the drivetrain on the Ranger and other engines.

GL-5 gear oil can sometimes be GL-4 compitable. I know Royal Purple gear oil is. Check the bottle's to see if they are both GL-4 & GL-5 compitable when shopping. The reason being for an GL-4 is that its less corrsive than GL-5 against the soft metals found in the syncros of manual transmission.

Amsoil is awesome stuff. in my opinion amsoil and royal purple are better than the bigger name companies.

Okay looks Like I will get Royal purple.

I just hope you guys are not ranting and raving because YOU bought it, rather than an objective opinion on the performance of the product.

Royal Purple is very expensive. The expensive car company uses Royal Purple whenever you bring it in to get an oil change, Lexus uses it. Royal Purple is really easy for me to find. The NAPA in town carries it. I'm quite sure it's quality stuff(NAPA carries it)

Napa is a dealer of RP. Thats why they carry a wide selection of it. Now only if they carried the RP MaxCycle. My motorcycle would be covered too.

Expensive is a understatement. When my work had a sale of RP, I bought enough oil to last 3 years worth (well now its 2year because of my NY trip). And the amazing part is this, I got it at $5 per quart, tax free. Now its around $8.50.

One thing I noticed in the RP product guide. If the tranny acpects GL-3, 75w-90, or 80w-90 it says to use a 10w-40 motor oil.

I will just scan it, it be better that way:

One word. Amsoil. Best imho. Been using it in everything for 25 years. Never had to tear an engine down, they stay clean, change it once a year. Can't beat the 100:1 2-stroke oil either. Pricing is not cheap, but generally a better deal than redline, don't know about RP. Also, the ATF is awesome.

I run Royal Purple whenever possible. Two exceptions are the 4.0L on my daily driven Ranger (I run Valvoline Synthetic) and my Banshee (Klotz Techniplate @ 32:1).

I've been running Valvoline 80w90 w/ 1 qt of Lucas in my diffs.
And for my trans and t-case Dex-merc III W/ 1 qt of Lucas.

I see no need for $9/qt oil in my 15yr old truck

But on the other hand, My buddy's Raptor built ($2,400) TH700R4 is only warrantied if Royal Purple ATF is used.

With RP you're paying for all the advertising, it's way overpriced. Redline, Amsoil and Mobil1 are fine.
