I just happened to leave my truck running and walked around it and hear this noise, i was like what the hell is that, so i pop the hood and all i hear is tick tick tick tick tick from the top of the engine. it coming from just under the intake manifold. im not sure what these engines look like inside, but im going to assume thats where the cam is. i drove it home without any probelms, but its going to ford tomorrow. im glad i bought my warranty, cus i didnt pay all this cash for a ticking ranger. :annoyed:

the best way i could explain the noise would be when you pedal a bicycle chain backwards and it ticks. just sounds like metal on metal and im not liking it. gona get it checked out before anything bad happens.

im assuming its the notorious 4.0 timing chain issue. anybody care to let me know? ive done spark plugs and a fram air filter to this truck, as well and a throttle body clean by my dealership. i highly doubt those would cause this, as all of that was atleast 2 weeks ago. i just noticed this tonight, so let me know if im on the money or not. :bawling:

i'm not familiar with this motor's internals, but being an OHC, i would imagine the problem lies with hydraulic lash adjusters, kinda like mini lifters...

hmm. so maybe its clogged? or bad oil? its running castrol. the stock recommended viscosity. **** i hate this little shit.

not so little on those motors-i'm assuming ohc.

the timing sets are a cartridge assembly, but are still a pain to replace.one drives off the front of the motor, the other drives off the back.

The rear chain can't be done in place either...the bolts are lefthand thread on the back one too...

If the noise is coming from the lower intake area I somewhat doubt it's camshaft related. The cam's live atop the head, under the valve cover.

If it sounds like a bike being pedaled backwards I'd guess it's one of two things:

1) The jack-shaft that acts as an idler for the rear timing chain

Or, and probably more likely

2) an exhaust leak. The right size and position of a leak can make it sound like a bicycle.

I have a partially pushed out gasket at my Y-pipe to cat joint that I just haven't gotten to fixing yet. It sounds like that at about 2 grand under load.

x2 on the exhaust leak

I bet it is a lifter noise. How many miles on the truck?

exactly what im thinking

It could also be the notorious northern black fly that makes a ticking noise as it breeds...but it's kinda cold right now for f*cking flies under the hood...

I'd say I have no idea otherwise, but you might want to check the oil level if you haven't already done so...

its not an exhaust leak. you cant hear anything from inside the cab, even at idle with the window down. you have to pop the hood to hear it.

its a ratcheting noise from the top of the engine. nowhere near any exhaust pieces. im going to leave it for now. i had my mechanic look at it and we are going to see how it goes. hell i have warranty if the timing goes and throws the valves into the pistons.
