The quest for 20 MPG!!!

Do the intake manifold hot water bypass (if applciable), bypass your EGR (if applciable) do the MAF mod (the MAF mod worked great on my '00 - later model year Ranger owners reported throwing cel lights after the mod, so you might want to research it before doing it), take the restrictive snorkel out of the from the front of your airbox, throw in a 180* t-stat, and install an electric radiator fan. I did those mods to my Ranger ('00 2wd) and my mileage went from about 17mpg to around 22mpg, and I've got noticeably more power to boot.

I obviously can't verify your mileage claims but reasonably doubt that an over 20% increase in mpg's occurred because of what you listed. Why didn't Ford, in trying to produce better competitive fuel mileage, make these changes? The lower temp thermostat actually would enrich the A/F ratio. The other mods assume that Ford designed fuel trim to run rich and that your changes produced leaner ratios and a different fuel trim adjustment by the ECU by the assumption you increased the air volume.

I obviously can't verify your mileage claims....
Yes, you're one of those book-educated internet experts that offers up expert advice on subjects that you have no personal knowledge of. You have zero personal experience with the mods that I've described, yet you would tell us that this can't work and that can't work, blah blah blah. The mods that I've described are cheap and easy to do, and if they don't work then everything can be put back to stock in a relatively short period of time, and nobody gets hurt.

So why don't you take your book-knowledge and your theorys and go start a stock 3.0 thread and let the rest of that like to tinker with our trucks have our fun. :icon_thumby:

First fuel mileage is not a constant and changes with a number of variables. Your assertion about gains just doesn't add up. I average 20 mpg with highs at 22 and lows about 18 - with a stock setup, not information that I got from a book. If you're so sensitive about your assertions being questioned then that's your problem. Let me know when this site bans open discussion.

Like I said, you have no personal or practical experience with the mods that I've done to my truck, yet you somehow feel qualified to offer expert advice on what will and what won't work. The internet is full of those type of book-learned experts these days.

If you feel that the Ford engineers have done such a great job with the 3.0 engine, then I say God bless you, and enjoy your stock truck. But by the same token there are those of us out here that actually do mods to our trucks and we have actual personal knowledge of what does and does not work, and all we would ask is that you would show some class and cease with your antagonistic attitude towards us modders and let us have our fun. Start yourself a stock 3.0 thread, and then you can discuss your stock truck to your hearts desire. :icon_thumby:

The 3.0 is the 3.0, other then spend money there is not much more you will get from the engine. Even a tear down and port / polish will not make a ton of differenece. Enjoy the truck as is, keep her lookin pretty, keep her well maintained and she'll run for ever.

On my 94 F-250 I gained 3-4 highway mpg by keeping the tonneau cover closed and tight, and my old Dakota did 17 city/ 25 hwy with a sleek leer cap, 17 city/ 23 hwy without. These newer Rangers might already be pretty aerodynamic, but it's worth asking around.

For all you low cost modders here's a mod that's guaranteed to save fuel.

http://www.tornadofuel-saver.com/ :haha:
Why do you have to act like a jack hole and be so antagonistic? What sweat is it off of your back if some of us like to tinker with our trucks? Show some class and go start a stock 3.0 thread and let us have our fun, OK Pookie?

My 4.0 stock did better than 20....... i have 33's and still get 17 hwy.

Frank

these 3.0's are strange little engines..... no power no economy but they will last 350k miles on one oil change wth ?

I can't or don't, want to stop anyone from "tinkering".
Then why do you post such antagonistic things on this site? Are you that starved for attention that you feel the need to wreck our fun?

Please, take your book knowledge and your love for the stock 3.0 and start your own thread... what is it about that concept that you're having so much trouble grasping?
