Probably same place that I do. I never would think to call the Ranger a mid-size.

It is a mid size truck. My 83 Ranger when I bought in '84 it said 'Mid Size' when I bought it back then. The Ford posters said Mid Size truck on them that I bought back then (offroad and street posters). It is confusing...but the Ranger is a mid size truck. Compact trucks are named compact when their bed length is under 6 ft. My '99 Supercab has a 6 ft bed. Some websites are incorrect. Truck magazines and truck websites have stated
the Ranger is a mid size truck. Park my Supercab next to an early Toyota, Nissan and they are smaller. So what is smaller than compact? Micro size?

So a Supercrew F-150 is a micro? My Ranger has a 7' bed to my F-150's 6.5' bed so it is a bigger truck then?

The Ranger never really grew, it was never the size of a Dakota, Taco or Frontier. It ain't a fullsize, it ain't a glorified golf cart micro and it isn't a half ton wannabe mid-size... it is a compact.

Ford must have changed their tune for '85, just flipping through my brochure quickly I saw them call the Ranger a compact at least twice, once in the first sentence on page one and once again on page nine.

Ford tried to keep up with everybody else and call it a midsize basically when there were no other compacts left.

The new ranger I saw was this:

Why would Ford make such a dramatic change to the Ranger after quitting US sales?
Also, what makes it illegal in the states?

Fact: A Tacoma raped an F-150 and spawned this medusa of a truck.

That is all

Yes, very confusing as well. Consumer Reports back in the 80's called the Ranger a mid size truck and the early Datsun trucks and early Toyota trucks were called compact. It is very confusing. I have several brocures and I looked at the photos you posted and it says compact not mid sized. My '83 Ranger 4x4 was listed as mid sized when I bought mine back in 84. Well, that just don't make since...like putting a Ford motor in a Mazda....lol

The ranger is a compact truck. If you look at a dakota, tacoma, or frontier, they're all mid sized trucks. Like someone stated before, they put it in a magazine against a mid sized truck catagory because only the ranger and colorado/canyon are still considered a compact truck. If you rode in one of the other trucks, you would notice that they're much bigger inside and out than a ranger

The safety thing is BS. If the mr2, Lamborghini, smart, and vette, any other tiny plastic car can pass the ranger should. Emissions is another BS reason at least in MD, there are no emissions on diesels..... yet.

The discontinued Ranger is a compact....always has been. The Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevy Colorado are mid sized.
I don't know why you are being such a jerk, look at a Toyota Tacoma and a Ranger side by side and not a whole lot of common sense is involved to figure out one is WAY bigger than the other.

The GM Colorado/Canyons are a bit bigger than the Ranger.
Dodge started the mid size pickup craze in 1987 with the Dakota. A curb weight of over 4000 lbs makes it a mid size....the 3200 cub weight of the Ranger makes it compact.

I can see where some (not Ford obviously) might have called the Ranger and S-10 "midsize" when they first came out. They were quite a bit bigger than the Hilux, Courier and LUV. After awhile the other guys upsized or died out and the term compact stuck with with them because frankly they were all comparable trucks sizewise. Then the Dakota marched to its own drum long enough to make the term "midsize" stick for the forseeable future and eventually everyone else either joined them or died out.

I know for my lifetime (born in '84, didn't really keep track of cars much until early to mid 90's) the Ranger has always been called a compact for as long as I can remember but it is very plausable in the very beginning they were bigger enough from everybody else to have been called a midsize.
