The Lightning Returns!

The Lightning should have some pretty serious street cred too though.

IMO the way the Lightning looks is complex.

Yeah, it doesn't look weird.

But it is also still a body on frame truck. It has very respectable payload and towing capacities.

Also Ford isn't a startup, it literally has the best selling vehicle in the US to borrow parts from... so financially it makes sense to borrow parts from what already exists and owns the market rather than inventing a new wheel.

The Rivian looks ok compared to a Cybertruck (honestly that is a pretty low bar) but as far as a truck goes... meh. Mainly its all plastic.

Electric is not to the level to do what I do with my truck... cornstalks and brush will make short work of plastic bumper covers though and that is nothing new.

Advantages of the F150 Lightning
1. Qualifies for $7,500 tax credit
2. Up to 775lb of torque (Gas Raptor has 510lb)
3. Up to 563HP (Gas Raptor has 450hp)
4 Pro Power Onboard which has tons of plugins all around the truck
5. Home backup battery - for most people combining their vehicle and a home backup is pretty smart.
I see 1 big issue with this is batteries wear out with use. Most charge cycles means less life. So every time you run your house off your truck, you're reducing the mileage you will get from vehicle long term.
6. Mega Frunk - It can hold up to 400lbs and it'll be hilarious seeing people's reactions when you pop this open at store and stick groceries in the "engine compartment"

At least Ford is somewhat serious about vehicle electrification but I think they should have waited until they had better battery tech to release the F150 Lightning.
230 miles range on small battery is pathetic for a truck. In the cold this will be maybe 125 miles.
Towing in cold may leave you with 50-75 mile range, then it will take 10 hours to recharge at level 2 charger. (240v at 48amp home charger) Ford is offering optional 80amp that shortens this down to less than 8 hours.

A think a Ranger or light duty SUV would have been much better suited for going electric first as you expect less towing/hauling from a ranger vs f150.

Fast charging = reduced range over time as well. Car and driver tested some electric something or other (I forget) for 40k miles and due to fast charging they lost almost 40 miles of range in that time. Over 10%.

I am really curious how truck things will effect its range.

200 miles... that is 2/3 of a tank (normal daily driving) in my current slobbering 2002 F-150 with a roughly 22gal tank. Of course "recharge" is minimal on it too.

I would like to get a full 4 door truck I could put my camper in and go places as a family.

If my Skamper plus interstate speed cuts the range in half... it is going to take me a long time to get anywhere 100 miles at a time.

I haul a lot of heavy/weird crap but not terribly far from home so I don't think I would really get into a problem that way.

Fun fact, I think the screen on the dash is bigger than the TV we played 4 player halo on in college...

I always thought the EV rangers were neat but the tech 20 years ago sucked, they had like a 60 mile range. What can you even do with that?! Give me an EV ranger with a 230 mile range though and I'd be all over it. Yea it won't work for long trips or hauling heavy stuff but you can get a decent amount done with 230 miles, my ranger might get 230 miles put on it over 2 weeks lol. And 8-10 hour charge is long but plenty fast enough to charge overnight and give you a full "tank" in the morning. Take it for what it is... Perfect badass truck for trips back and forth to work or running to home depot on the weekends. Need to haul a camper across country then yes, you need a gas engine lol.

Everybody is saying gas is dead so I can't help but think about it as an alternative.

For most of the time 200 miles at a whack would be more than plenty... as long as you don't really need it to do truck things.

Electric is becoming far more main stream but gas/diesel ain't going anywhere especially in trucks. There's simply no infrastructure for long distance trips or heavy hauling. However consider that the technology is evolving almost daily. Again, 20 years ago EVs were god awful and now we have a full sized truck with more balls than the raptor and a respectable range. Imagine what this tech will be in 20 more years. In 20 years you just might be able to tow a 10,000 pound trailer across country in an EV truck without a second thought. :dunno:

My 36 gallon tank gets me over 600 miles normally, I had to stop 3 times to fill up on towing out to Attica. If I had to stop and recharge every 100 miles, I wouldn’t go.
Every time I use my truck for “truck” things, it’s towing a long distance. That truck would be absolutely useless as a truck for me. I’d rather have an electric commuter car and a gas truck.

I thought about that but I am getting too many noses to take care of at that point. That would put me up to four vehicles...

Consider this though, how many F150 owners truly use their truck for "truck things"? Especially raptor owners. :icon_rofl:

Most people use their truck for stuff they could do in a damn fiesta... So if you wanna be clearly practical about it, WHY AM I THE ONLY ONE WITH A FIESTA!? Fiesta drives back and forth to work, truck does truck things on the weekends.

Everyone go buy a fiesta right now!

Because batteries, tires, upkeep, insurance and tags would eat more money than the thing would save me on fuel... and if I hit a deer I would rather look at it than up at it.

If I hit a deer I want something low enough where it gets launched 20' In the air and lands inside the stupid convertible behind me.

Eh, the last one I hit was thrown across the oncoming lane.

A couple years ago a lady in a car had one come thru the windshield... neither survived.
