Sort of. Principles are similar but the 5.0->5.8 swap is a lot closer in displacement (16% jump compared to 38% on the 2.9->4.0). You're a lot more likely to go outside of what the ECM is able to compensate for.

Ah makes sense when you put it in percentage. I was just thinking in liters. 5.0-5.8 is .8 and only .3 less then the 2.9 to 4.0 difference.

I'm definitely not saying it can't be done - given the right tweaks it's probably fine. Especially given that the 4.0 is a lower RPM engine making about 15% more peak power than the 2.9.

When did the 3.0 get EDIS?

Could you use the 3.0 ECM with 4.0 sensors and such?

The fuel maps would be close then. Could be totally out in left field here though.

I have run the 2.9 with a taurus pcm before.

With your supercharger tuning a 4.0 system may work out well. It's already Framed for maf.

Yessir. Already running megasquirt.

MAF install is on the list, as well as knock sensor. Figured I'm going to have it off the road all winter, so lining up modifications to make and parts to pull

I was wondering that myself.

A 4.0 ECM should run a 2.9 shouldnt it? Then it would just be a matter of driving the oil pump and mounting stuff.

The biggest issue there is that the 2.9 has no provision for mounting a crank sensor, or trigger wheel.

I'd imagine the 4.0 ecu would need a different tune in order to compensate for the larger displacement without constantly causing a CEL.

Not really. Worst case scenario you need to install undersized injectors, and maybe get the MAF calibrated.

Why not just swap your entire engine for a 3.0?

Make a mount and sandwich an OEM piece or a aftermarket piece...

ati makes custom stuff....for custom prices...



With what house wants to do with the 2.9...its best to run as solid an ignition system as possible.

With the mega squirt you can go to individual coil firing....use that with like 5.3 truck coils or whatever....for a hot ass spark and as close to timing that is perfect as possible....

with boost...

on this thin wall head critter...

applying the effort to index the plugs to Max out flame front and that hot spark.....will greatly assist dialing in temps and knock..... resulting in a long life 240 to 270 HP 2.9

Marc Emery (The Prince of Pot) changed the weed game in North America (possibly the entire world) for sure. He was doing some really interesting stuff way back when..
