Temp sender not working

swinging back and forth between N and O tells me it is a real gauge (not an idiot light/"centered needle") and it is doing exactly what it is supposed to, when the engine builds up to thermostat open it is climbing, the thermostat opens, "cold" coolant (like 120 degree) rushes in and quenches the gauge... if you want it to read between R and M then install a standard 192 degree thermo or the appropriate resistor to get the right resistance. If you can live with it swinging between N and O and REMEMBER that is what it is supposed to do, then you got it working perfectly.

Okay thank you for the clarification I’m gonna see if I can get a temp gun to sometime soon to make sure it’s staying in a good range with no problem areas

Thats exactly what my 87 does too.

Its normal.

Ford didnt use "dummy" temp gauges. Only the oil pressure gauge got switched in midyear 87.

The issue with ford temp gauges is that "norm" or "normal" isnt a temp reading
