When I get home for good we want to leave Columbus Georgia badly. Right now we are taking a serious look at the Valdosta area. If we were to stay in Georgia, that is where we will be. However, I would rather leave Georgia altogether. I have seen more of the rest of the world than I have my own country. The problem is we have no idea where to begin. So, I was hoping you all could tell me a bit about the state you live in and help us get started on our hunt for a new home.

This is what we are looking for.

1. We are big outdoor enthusiast. We have off road trucks, ATV’s, and horses. We want to live some where we can enjoy these hobbies and not have some pricks giving us crap over it.
2. I am most likely going to pursue a career in law enforcement when I return. (However, the fire academy is also a possibility.) I am also interested in a security or force protection job on a military base. (That is what I currently do). So if you could tell me about the law enforcement agencies and bases in your area that would be great.
3. NO LIBERALS. I do not want to deal with people telling me I am wrong for running big tires on a big truck. Or bothering us for trail riding in the woods.
4. I own guns and want to enjoy them. I would prefer a state that will recognize my concealed weapon permit or at least allow me to get a new one for that state.
5. Cost of living. I think this goes with out saying.
6. Cost of land and taxes. Just give me a rough idea as to what we would be looking at.
7. We want to live in a small town environment with good schools.

I think that about sums up what we are looking for. Please feel free to tell me all about your area and state.

i personally would stay out of jersey, cost of living is high, taxes are high, its very hard to get a carry permit, there are very few places to ride your atv and go off-roading without getting hassled

based on what your looking for, i don't thunk you would be happy here in jersey( im leaving in a year or so)

It sounds like a place I do want to stay away from. I have not thought about the north too much, but I do hear there are some nice small towns in some spots.

Well I'll tell you a bit about my area. I live in Kennewick (part of Tri-Cities), Washington. It's a fialry small region (or at least it used to be) that is continuously growing and expanding. I think between all three cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland) the population is roughly 200,000. I know it's quite the jaunt from Georgia, but I figured I'd post anyways.

I'll just answer your questions as you listed them.

1. Lots of outdoors here and nearby. We're right between the Blues, Mt. Baker, Mt. Bachelor, Blue Wood and several other snowboarding places. Lots of places to camp and just get away from the city. There's also a lot of farm land that you can live on for your horses.

2. For law enforcement, once again this is a rapidly growing area and more police officers are constantly being hired. Also a lot of large companies (like Hanford, Battelle, PNNL, Energy Northwest, etc.) that always need more security guards. And I know they can pay quite well as I have a cousin who is a security guard for Energy Northwest and can make somewhere around $600 a night.

3. You shouldn't have to worry too much about your tires. Lots of lifted rigs and I know a bunch of people with lifted rigs and have never been harassed by anyone.

4. Yep, you can get a concealed weapon permit. Several buddies have them, only takes about $100 bucks and a half hour of time at the court house.

5. Cost of living I'd say is reasonable for the area. With the same accomodations and businesses as cities like Seattle and Spokane nearby, the cost of living is WAY less. 8.3% sales tax. IDK what else to add to this section..

6. I'm only 19 so I haven't bought any land here. Can't help much here. There's a lot of really nice areas that have $500,000 homes (very high end for the Tri-Cities) and then some that are like $80,000 (towards the lower end of the spectrum).

7. I would say that we have the best schools in the state. I know test scores are always increasing. And from personal experience, I loved every year I went to school. Great atmosphere, teachers actually care about the student and their learning, and it's safe. High schools each have a police officer/resource officer and several security personnel. I don't know how old your kids are, but I know we have never really had an issue with school safety/"bomb threats" and things of that sort.

I hope this helps, I know it's probably a lot further than you wanted to go. But it's a really nice area. Economically it's a booming region. If you feel like being a city slicker for the night, you can go places and feel it. But if you prefer the small town feel, you def can have that too.

Thanks man. Washington and Oregon are topping my list of possibilities. I have read so many awesome things about those two states. I hear there is a lot of wilderness and mountains. That is what I want. My wife is afraid of the winters and the rain though.

Wyoming= alot of bordum, but four wheelers are street legal and there alright off-roading

South Dakota is alright, not very many ridiculous laws and some good wheelin spots that are disappearing. There are too many yuppies moving here too.

It's a nice state and I don't want to leave...but SD has some major issues working against it. First it is incredibly hard to find decent jobs, especially in small towns like you're looking at. Real estate is insanely expensive because of all the damn yuppies thinking they're making an investment. And 90% of a certain group does nothing but cause problems.

Tennessee. We have everything you want.

Idaho. The state is a wide open outdoor playground. State population is lower than the population of LA or New York City. Mountains, high desert plains, river areas. ATV, 4 wheeling areas, hunting and fishing all around. Active rodeo circuit, 4H and horseman groups. At the same time, this is a farming state with high technology industries all over. Cost of living is low. I live on ~$2000/mo with 5 kids in house. Low population, must issue for CCW, low taxes, low private tuition with good public schools. Taxes are set by the state and county, not by local pols, but they are low compared to many surrounding states. My town is the 3rd largest in the state at 67,000 population.

Idaho is conservative, in spite of the libs in state congress. Consistently conservative.

My vote for COLORADO. I run cattle here, and wheel a lot(when I'm not down). Here are a few pics........

Colorado does sound like an excellent place to live. VA offers some great options for low cost of living, outdoors related things, etc. I don't think there's that much four wheeling right around me (not sure, as I don't really wheel), but I know there's a ton of stuff in several directions if you're willing to drive a bit. Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, etc... are all reasonably accessible for a weekend trip.

colorado is a awesome place, bloodbane is right. i dont think im ever leaveing here:icon_thumby:

Colorado was on my short list. I read a lot about the trail systems and I thought I had found my new home. But I heard the liberals are taking that state over and closing trails faster then they can be faught off.

Tennessee is where our family lives. They libe Greene county near Johson City. At one time we oth wanted to move there. But the cost of land as gottne stupid over the past few years.

Idaho is worth considering, especialy since I laerned abot the security jobs at the nuclear facilities.

Wyoming, is one of the states my wife and I agreed that we could live in. There aren't many states we both agreed we could live in.
