OK, I have a set of 91' tail lights that have been tinted on the outside with some sort of spray-on black tint.

Is there anything I can use to take that stuff off without melting the lens?

I know I can get it off with, say, lacquer thinner; but, I am pretty sure that would attack the plastic lens. :icon_confused:

Any ideas would be helpful.

Ed

It's called "goo-gone" works wonders,

Try the Goo-Gone and also give a try with Turpentine. I use the orderless type and it has worked on a lot of stuff.

My sister used some kind of special tint-remover (Tint-Off maybe) to get it off the taillights on her cobalt after she got a ticket for the tint.

If all the other ideas fail, try wet sanding, and polishing the same as restoring yellowed headlights. It works, but a bit more elbow grease than the other ideas. :icon_cheers:

all else fails, LMC truck or junkyard and new tails.

AJ

You're better off getting new tail lights. I re-tinted a pair of tails for a friend, they had been previously done with that night shades crap, lacquer thinner barely touched the stuff, and I ended up sanding the hell out of the lights to get most of it off, I was repainting them anyway so it all covered up though.

If I rear end someone that has TINTED brake lights, I am for sure going to point that out to the officer.

Tinted brake lights are illegal. A judge ordering you to pay punitive damages to someone that rear ended you sound fun?

Are you talking to me? Or did you just completely fail to read the original post?

Relax guys. :D
I just want to get the black crap off a set of taillights I have. Will try your suggestions and let you know what I find out.

Get on CL, find someone parting one out and spend $20 on another pair.

Sure beats spending 4hrs on them using $10 worth of supplies. That'd be like paying yourself $2.50/hr...

Dunno about you, but my time is worth way more than that.

I like this suggestion. Very logical.

Edit: Wait. It's for a 91? Rock Auto had those for like $7 a piece new awhile back.

That is for 90' and ealier taillights. They won't fit a 91' will they? $25 each for 91'.

I do believe the cut off is 89, I suppose I could be wrong, I just know my '92 is different than a first gen. The reverse light sockets differ between the generations.
Come to think of it, I think I have a set of tail lights at my parents, if you want them you can have them, just pay me shipping.
