ok........ ive recently had some coolant issues and replace the radiator, several hoses and sunday the t-stat. my truck is an 84 2.8v6 carb and ive never had problems finding parts.....but this time is different. the t-stat housing broke off at the dog ear and i cannot find one anywhere. every parts store has the one that is typical for my truck but not the right one. according to haynes... "some 2.8v6 have a different configuration" mine being one of them. i am attaching a few pics and hopefully someone can help. my car just lost the transmission and i have no vehicle! thanks......

Your setup looks like my old 84 and if so, the thermostat is supposed to go in the lower radiator hose housing. I made the mistake of putting one in the upper housing and the heater and the temp gauge wouldn't work until the engine was completely warm since it seals too tightly around the thermostat. If yours is like mine, I suspect the reason your housing broke is that there is no recessed area for the thermostat.

ok..thanks for the reply. its odd though that this is where my thermostat has been located and ive had the truck for 9 yrs with no problems before now.........and could you show me of a pic of where the t-stat should go and any ideas on replacing the part that broke?

not a single parts store or junk yard ive been to can match the part from my truck but i have been told it has a genuine ford parts number on it.

This is the housing where your t-atat goes on the lower hose, The upper housing you can try ebay or amazon using the part number you have or find one at the bone yard. If you find one at the bone yard on a 2.8 that has a two piece housing on top you can put your t-stat there and just plug the hole for the bypass off the intake manifold and get a bent 1" hose for the two piece t-stat housing.

It's possible you still have a thermostat in the lower housing. It's a weird looking housing with three bolts. The gasket they gave me at the parts store had two holes and fit the upper housing so I assumed that is where the thermostat went. Except the thermostat needs to have the recess to fit into so the housing won't crack when tightened.

I could almost swear there's a Chevy housing that's almost exactly like that.

Rockauto shows two thermostat housings for the 84 ranger, One doesn't have a pic, but is described as a "3 hole" type. Might try getting in touch with them to see if you can get a pic.
