Let the universe take you where it will !!!
Ive been thinking about fords new coolant and if it would be good to switch my 4.0 over. Or should i just stick with good ole ethelyn glycol 50/50

Stick with the good ol green stuff. No sense spending the money on something that has a long life as it's big pro over the stuff you need to change every couple years. You engine is at the age that you will likely be draining the coolant out for a system repair or having it leak out due to a component failure...

Also think of how well the new stuff reacts with the old stuff if you don't get it flushed properly..

Save you some money :)

I would stick the green stuff. If seems like every time they try and reinvent the wheel, they find out the wheel isn't any better than the first one and tends to ends up with problems in the future.

Thanks its kinda how i felt about it, ive heard the newer stuff is supposed to be better at preventing corrosion, but as long as you dont use tap water its not much of a worry. Figured id check with the know it alls;)

Yeah, only use distilled water id you aren't going to buy the premixed stuff. I just buy the premix. Once you factor in the cost of a gallon of distilled water, it seems the price pretty much evens out and I don't have to do any mixing.

If you really want tp upgrade, Ford's gold/yellow coolant lasts longer and isn't bothered by residual green stuff. You can actually mix it with green stuff and it won't hurt anything, it just won't last as long. Our grocery store sells distilled water for a little over a buck and Walmart gets $.80, that makes it worth mixing my own.

My truck came from the factory with the gold stuff. 12 years now I've only changed it once and the cooling system is still crystal clean. Can't do that with the ole green goo. (y)

This guy explains them all and even he likes the gold stuff...

Thats actually the video that got me thinking about it lol. Just wanted other opinions on the topic for a 27 year old engine lol.

The green stuff works it just doesn't last long so if you change it regularly you have no reason to switch, the gold seemed to last forever and work great, the orange was based on dex-cool so I wouldn't touch that with a 40 foot pole, that dark green stuff is a mystery to me and seems to have vanished.

So to me, the real question is, does the new yellow beat the old gold?

If my truck came with green, I'd probably switch to gold but thats just me. I dunno nothing bout the yellow. But again, its like oil. Change it on time and it doesn't matter.

I’m cheap and I’ve always used the green stuff with tap water with no issues. I do maintain my cars well, so few losses or repairs, just an occasional top off.

I have a 4-5 gallon chemical jug with a spicket from I-don’t-know-what that I keep the antifreeze mix in. I even reclaim the used stuff when I do work, and mix it in.

In Atlanta, if you protect to 10-below, you’re safe. The hygrometer to check it is cheap, mine is 50-years old. So I top off the jug and add water till it climbs to 10-below. That’s usually 1.5 water to 1 antifreeze, and Walmart stuff is fine. If I dump used in, I filter it with a window screen and paint filter, and balance it out. Of course if the used stuff looks like crap, I toss it. But if it looks ok...

Ok, now you guys can scream blasphemy & come and tar and feather me!!!
