Can the tail shafts and housings be swapped between 4 cyl, and 4.0 m5od's?

you mean take the output out of one and put it in another? yes it can be done.

Yes, that's waht I mean. I have a blown 4.0/2.9 m5od with the 4x4 output shaft and housing, but I need the 4 cyl bell housing. But I cannot find ANY (for a reasonable price) 4cyl m50ds with 4x4 hind quarters, but i've found several 2wd's.

the only difference between the 2wd and 4wd trannys is the main shaft and if your 4x4 trans is bad it would more than likely need a main shaft anyway

hmmm, somethin to think about. I'll take it apart this weekend and see what went wrong. It actually still drove around and shifted just fine. But it made a lot of noise in a couple of the gears. Then when i drained the oil there were deffinately chunks of somethin comin out.

The two places to look at a Mazda 4x4 mainshaft are the pocket bearing pilot
where the front of the mainshaft rides in the pocket bearing inside the input gear

The other place that I JUST discovered the hard way, is to have the
output shaft magnafluxed from the spline roots forward to the beginning
of the threads.

There are some parts inside the trans that are DIFFERENT
between a 4.0 and "all other" as well as year differences.
