swapping carriers in 8.8

Can the carriers in 8.8s be swapped between a 28 and a 31 spline?

I believe the 31 spline axle has a bigger axle bearing that won't fit in the 28 spline housing.

Bearings are the same, it's the side gears that are different (don't think you can swap those either).

so if the bearings are the same theoretically you could use an explorer 31 spline locker and a set of FX4 31 splines in the ranger 28 spline housing?
