Hello,

I recently bought a '99 Ranger (Extended cab, 4 door, 4x4, 4.0L).
I like it a lot. But I have always hated automatic transmissions.

Recently my buddy wrecked his i believe '98 ranger, the front end looks kinda messed up but it's totaled because the frame is too tweaked. It was his baby so it was always taken care of.

The point is it has a flawless manual transmission. I think there were two kinds, this one has overdrive.

If I buy the vehicle for scrap price am I going to have everything I need to swap transmissions with mine? What other things would I have to buy? He has the 3.0L flex fuel engine so I don't know if all the transmissions will bolt up the same.

Any help would be great. I love this truck, I've already tapped a grease eyelet on the drive shaft, replaced master cylinder, wheel cylinders, calipers, rotors drums and lines. And I'm working on my vacuum hubs now. Any other advice would be great as well.

Thanks.

There were several manual transmissions, only the overdrive M5OD was available for either of your two trucks.

Unfortunately since the M5OD does not have a removable bellhousing and the 3.0 and 4.0 have different bellhousing bolt patterns they do not interchange at all.

You'll have to find a M5OD from a pickup with a 4.0, man.

In my area, M5ODs off 4.0s are more common on Explorers.

Most of the Rangers in the local yards don't have 4.0s, but all the Explorers do (except the V8s).

You will want one from a 4.0l, but you'll also want one from a 98+ since the older ones have a hole for a speedo cable. Your speedo is run off of the rearend.

Another thing to note is not only are the bellhousing patterns different between engines, but the gear ratios are different as well.

any tranny 91 to 00 would work. the 99 ranger uses the rear abs sensor as the speedo signal. i swapped my 99 from an auto to a manual. and my 95 has a SOHC with a 94 M5od behind it minus one bolt hole. if you get into a 01 newer tranny, they have a speed sensor on the side of them where the older ones did not. to swapp it your going to need.....

computer, 99 is pats, so dealer is going to have to reprogram it to you key.
clutch pedal assembly, clutch line, slave, master cylinder, clutch kit, 8 bolt fly wheel, floor bezel, shifter boot, clutch interta switch, manual starter, bell housing shim, and new steering wheel shrould to get rid of the shifter hole for the auto and the little block off plate for the cluster. i beleive the 99 harness is one piece so you an splice in your wires for the 4x4 low and starter engagement basically jumping a couple wires together. other than that you should be all set.

3.0 TRANNYS DO NOt bolt up to a 4.0. nothing on your buddes truck would be efficient to you except the pedal assembly, and some of the interior pieces, such as shifter boot and bezels.

The speedo in my 94 is driven off the transfer case. Not the trans.

True, I'm used to working on 2wd, didn't notice the op has a 4x4..
