you have to have a special machine you plug it into a vaccum line such as the pcv and turn the machine on and watch for smoke

I had the same problem and it was the idle control valve.

hmmm ...i cleaned the iac but maybe ill just replace it and see what happens

my truck does the same thing ever since i replaced the motor. I'm thiniking it was the intake manifold gasket because when i put it on i didn't have a inch pound torque wrench and then so i just guessed. but i've been too lazy to tear it back apart to fix it.

Grab a can of brake cleaner and spray along the intake area, if your idle picks up you've got an intake gasket leaking.

will starter fluid work as well? or just brake cleaner?

swap out the iac valve

i had this same problem about a month ago. went through vacume hoses, new fuel and air filters, cleaned the maf sensor and all for nothing. i tried cleaning out my idle air control valve/mtor and it made it worse. bought a new iac valve and she's been idleing like a champ.

I had the same problem last weekend I went to Advance Auto for a code check so they said I had a no. 1 rich bank, which usually mean a bad oxygen sensor.I have a 2004 xlt 4x4 automatic.The sensor cost 49.00 but I didn't buy it because I had read the MAP sensor can throw the same code. I sprayed the MAP with contact cleaner then dryed it with compressed air and it solved my problem.
You can use starting fluid or carburator cleaner to check for vacuum leaks. I don't know about brake cleaning fluid.
