Has anyone substituted the intermittent wiper control module from an '86 Ranger into an '88? Part #s are different (E27F - E77F) but physically they seem the same. My wipers work correctly sometimes, sometimes not. I'd be in a world of hurt if not for Rain Ex. Removed the module w/ wiring from my '86 donormobile (NOT fun), don't want to remove the '88 just to find out they won't swap. Knowledgeable advise appreciated.

It should work. If they appear to be physically the same there is probably some minor difference in the electronics that will change something like wiper speed or delay time.

I'd just plug the 86 unit in and test it.

I had a issue with my 88 where the intermittent wipers were causing a misfire in engine when they would swipe. In my own experience with the electrical systems of these trucks I wouldn't swap parts if they're not the same, but there are people with far more knowledge about these trucks than me.

There is hardly a single pair of matched electronics modules on my truck, and everything works fine, except the tach.

Project complete.
Problem turned out to be the switch on the steering column. I'd installed the '86 module first & so just left it in. The two switches were identical. For future reference; module E27F will work in place of E77F even tho they're not identical - E27F has an external ground wire & some of the wire colors don't match. With NOS discontinued it's important that we document interchange info.
