so i have a 1994 4x4 4.0L ext cab 5 spd. and the other day i used 4 wheel drive to get up the drive way then shit it off and the next day i came out to drive it but when put in gear nothing happened. i could shift in and out of gears without the clutch but nothing was happening. so maybe the t case was stuck in N or something well i tried pushing the 4x4 button and nothing happened so i tried low ranger and it went into low range. but now it wont come out of low range. so any ideas?

Hit Low range again it should go in 4x4 Hi then hit Hi and should go into 2hi Mine got stuck the other day So I read my owners manual and that is the correct steps to get it out of low I beleive it needs to be in Nuetral while you are doing this Hope this helps. Second thing is maybe your 4x4 buttons took a crap

Thanks a lot man i tried that and nothing. the indicator doesnt show up on the dash and the indicator lights next to the buttons arent working. when i press the button it comes on VERY faintly but as soon as i take my finger off the button it goes back out. and i still cant seem to get it out of 4 low. i tried starting the truck putting it in N then going through your suggestion and i cant seem to get it in 4 high. so im not sure if that all means the buttons are junk or what. thanks for the tip, you wouldnt happen to have anymore do you? or anyone else?

Check the connection at the 4x4 control module, sometimes it gets corroded and will cease to work. Had the same thing once, it was aggravating not being able to get it out of 4lo!

You can always pull the motor off the Tcase and shift it with pliers until you find the true problem. But you probably already knew that

yeah thanks. i am debating it but this is my last fall back cause id rather not got to involved in it if i have another option.

this is a good idea cause i just did a clutch and slave so i just unplugged that and plugged it back in so it might have a crappy connection.

Well I guess the one at the shift motor would do it too!

okay well i read a few things on google and this is what ive tried so far.

-tried unhooking the batt to let things reset
-check both plugs at the motor and the switches
-tried mutiple patterns of button pushing including ensuring the truck was in N (its a 5 spd)
-and pushing the brake pedal.
-ive tried allowing the truck to roll around back and forth to the point of looking like a lost drunk in my parking lot.

I realize i can take the motor off and do it manually but thats also obviously not a solution to the problem. any more ideas on the actual problem? if i cant come up with something else by tomorrow ill be pulling the motor off i guess..

Did you try checking at the control module in the cab? After the switch but before the motor...

I don't know where it is in the BII, likely in the back behind some of the interior plastic. Don't mistake it for another thing back there though, right behind the drivers seat bhind a removable panel in the plastic. Sorry I'm not much help.

letting it roll back and forth wont help you, you have to put it in gear and drive about 4 ft in either direction if one dont work go the other way, in gear. this release pressure off the driveline, so it will shift.

i guess rolling back and forth was the wrong phrase it was in gear and driven back and forth across my parking lot trust me.
