I occasionally get a strange windy noise from under truck, 1996 3.0L 4x4 supercab.
As if a turbo fan is connected to the engine. Very loud with truck stopped and reving up engine. And loud going down the road.

Sometimes it doesn't make any noise at all for days.
Could the transfer case be engaging? Doesn't seem like it because drivability is not effected. (autohubs).

I have a snorkel, but its one piece PVC through the pass side fender.

Anyone had this happen?

I had sort of the same thing happen to my ranger. It started out just every once in a while esspecially when it's cold. After time it stayed on for me at least. If your truck has lost a bunch of power and making loud noise like a really high rev like mine it will be your clutch fan. Good luck!

Yep, the fan clutch can really roar, at times.

if its occuring while stopped, then its not in the drivetrane, it has to be in the engine.

if it was your snorkel, it would likely be occuring all the time, not intermitantly.

i too have to suspect your hearing the fan clutch cycling like it should.

found the problem, thanks

I found the problem, thanks.
You folks are really smart.
The fan blade felt a little loose, but clutch seemed OK.
Two weeks later, the engine developed a significant vibration above 3000 rpms, slightly noticable at idle also.
.
My truck now has an electric fan. :icon_thumby:

You guys know it all :-)

ahh, went for the e-fan downgrade eh? :icon_cheers:
You guys helped me diagnose the noise..
and
warned about a "downgrade"
.
Here is a pic of the electric fan controls failing when I had enough problems to deal with.
Melted fuse holder, no fan, boiled water today.
Check out the site for my troubled tale.

sorry to hear about your misfortune...looks like your in a hell of a pickle. did they get that loader out? that thing looked REALLY stuck! i cant believe people stole things from your stuck truck...what asshats.

do you mind if i use your pics when the arguement of e-fans reliability comes up?

Permission granted for e-fan discussions.
Now getting off topic a bit.
The loader is still in there :-(
I'm moving to the worst stuck thread now...
