As some of you know I was working on replacing the lifters in my 2.9L awhile ago and I've finally finished. After messing around with the timing, I got the thing running and it sounded pretty good! But after about 20 minutes of running, the infamous tick reared its ugly head once again :(.

Anyone have any ideas as to what else might be causing the tick?

not detanation im guessing, since you messed with the timing. oil pump system working well?

I'm beginning to suspect the oil pressure is the culprit, I will check the pressure as soon as I get access to a gauge, but as for now I'm kinda upset because the only reason I tore the thing apart was to quiet the tick >_<

too much clearance will cause noise as well. Did you set the proper clearance?

2.9s are known for injectors to tick nothing you can do about it lifters usually don't tick they knock i have had a 91 ford probe that had a lifter knock real bad i put seafoam in the oil ran it for a few hours and came back to have no noise at all drained the oil never knocked since my ranger has the 2.9 in it ticks like its it's job and it is the injectors if this helps your welcome if it don't im sorry for time wasted

I have read lots of posts on this subject and many point to clogged oil passages to the cam bearings and or worn cam bearings because the oil pressure goes to the cam bearings first before it goes to the lifters.

I'll be throwing in sea foam as soon as I get the chance to see if that will clear the oil passages, but I'm sure this is associated with ONE cylinder, sounds like a tap tap tap from the outside and I know that the engine isn't supposed to sound like this. My boss suggested today that I should put a new oil pump in because that might be causing low oil pressure, and another coworker told me that the cam bearings can turn and block the oil from getting to the top end. I'll probably just pour some wonder fluids in, possibly change the oil pump and if neither helps then I'm prepared to ditch this truck. Even though it belonged to my late father and has sentimental value, I'm not willing to shell out major money for something that will only degrade in value anyways. :P

I forgot to mention that someone said it could possibly be a wrist pin, not sure how I'd test for that but it sounds like a viable cause.

You can use a big, long screwdriver putting your ear on the handle and the tip where you think the noise is coming from....might help. Just be very careful to stay away from any rotating parts....ya dont wanna screwdriver jammed through you head lol

well you could go and run seafoam throughout your motor as i said drive on it for alil bit in a day dont let it sit and cool over night or all of the sediment and materials will just fall back down and later be picked up use about a half can for the oil and the next time you fill up put the rest of the can into your gas tank or if your real rich go and buy 10 quarts of oil and flush it twice once with cheap oil then put your good oil in last with a bottle of lucas just to make the oil stick better

by the way i use valvoline highmileage 10w 30 with the lucas oil aditative call me crazy but i love my truck so i try to go the extra mile

my personal choice is to use..

a piece of hardwood...(shovel handle, broom handle, dowel etc...)...works great & gets u firther from the "moving parts"
