still kicking this dead horse

Looks like ihad the wrong flywheel and it pushed my torque converter into the pump causing it to fail. Ford only made 1 crown vic model with the 351 aod combo in thier police cruzers. Now I gotta find one of these to get a flywheel that fits

for anyone bolting an aod to a 351w you only have one option of flywheel that will work on this combo its part #FRA205 its the flywheel for an 89 crown vic. this cost me alot of headache to figure out but any other flywheel will cause the torque converter to gouge the inside of the front pump and kill your fluid preasure. it would have been simple to use a c4 or np435 but i wanted overdrive for the highway, this aint no trailer queen yet

just started working on the Pile in my garage again, can anyone point me in the right direction for wiring my factory 2.9 tack to run with the 351w? i cant find any info on TRS.

Depending on where you look, the answer is either 'no, it can't be done' or 'it depends.' But your tach gets it's signal from the tach test lead of the coil. So everytime the coil fires the tach gets a signal from it. It also gets power from the battery. On a V8 there are two grounds that go to the tach, on a six there is only one ground.
I'm not familiar with your particular tach but you need to check the back to see if there are 4 posts on the back of it. If there are, they should be marked B, I (or C), G and 8.
If it is, wiring for it is:
1: B post on tach goes to battery power.
2: I post (or C) goes to the tach test lead of the coil.
3: G is the main ground for the tach. (This has to be grounded)
4: 8 is only grounded on a V8 engine.

If it isn't, I can't help. Maybe get an aftermarket one.

The extra ground is the difference between 6 & 8 cylinder tachs. This is why some aftermarket tachs have a selector switch to change between 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines.
Hope this helps.

Very good info thanks! I know the explorers had v8s and used thesame dash board as I have. At one time trs had a tech page on this procedure but I have lost tbe link to it. It can be done I remember at one time someone said I could tap into the v8 lug on the harness I just need to know where to find it or where to find that link

The V8 Explorers came out in 96 and had a different dash and cluster than yours but shared it with V6's and Rangers had it with 4's and V6's (95 and later). We know that one can be changed (link: http://www.fordrangerforum.com/8-cylinder-tech/9002-factory-tach-my-94-v8-please-help.html - bottom of page, post #10).
I would think Ford used the tach mechanisms among several series of vehicles so it should have the "8" lug on it.
Give it a shot. Worst it can do is read wrong or not have the "8" lug.

The back of my cluster says 8cyl signal and ground. So do I ground the 8cyl wire on the plug?

After trying several ways, took some time off to clear my head. Once tbe frustration was gone I sold this beast and now have nothing to do. Look for Landon to finish my build and be TOTM soon,he has some big ideas and o plan on helping him finish it. Tach or no tach!
