Standard vs automatic


B&M sold a clutch hydro trans for drag racing in the days before high stall convertors. Some of the early automatics were horribly inefficient- Buick dynaflow and chebby powerglide come to mind. Ever drive a powerglide? They have basically 2nd and 3rd(direct) gear with a loose convertor in front of it.My brother had a 67 Camaro with a 327 and a powerglide. I put an RV type cam in it with a Performer intake and a 600 Holley. With the powerglide you could mat the throttle from a stop and not spin a tire, once I put the turbo 350 trans in it, the tires would go up in smoke. Newer automatics are often more efficient than a manual trans, primarily thanks t lock up torque convertors and more gears with closer spacing. I'd still rather have a clutch pedal, I guess I'll see how this Ranger works with the C4.
 
I think a 460 would have had a T19. People could break those,too. In the late 80's we sold a pair of F250's to 2 brothers who were contractors with creeper gear transmissions and Fisher snow plows. One brother was on the big side and could be hard to get along with, the other was huge and a laid back, easy going guy. Most of the time. One morning his truck wouldn't shift out of second- broken shift fork if I remember right- he bent the lever up to the dash before he gave up and had it towed in.
Depends on the year IIRC. The T19 was more popular in the 80s, the 18 in the 70s.

I had a T18 behind my 78 F350 with a 400, that 6.32:1 1st with a 4.10 rear behind a late model 460 would flat out pull if it was in my 97.

Shit that 78 had a 4.30 rear and if you took off in 1st with a big enough load you could see/feel the frame twist up like a semi

The T18 did get into the 80's, dad's 80 had one.

No idea how many employees learned how to drive a stick in that thing. Third was kinda funky, you had to hook it to the left but it shifts better than the ZF5 in the truck that replaced it. It kicks out of first and is much trickier to get into third.

I had an 83 150 with a T18, was just sayin they seemed to lose popularity over the 19 as time wore on.

Them old 4 speeds were a blast to shift though. I could shift those alot faster then a semi-modern 5 speed.

Yes.

IIRC the T19 had a somewhat higher 1st gear to. Somewhere in the mid-upper 4 range.

Just looked it up, 5.11:1 1st on the T19, 6:32:1 on the T18.

I had an 89 F150 with a T18, the T19 was mostly in 250's and 350's.
