If the link doesn't work like I want it to, here it goes...

Just so happened to look up cats for my truck (88 2.9L xlt) and i found the OEM stacked cats (which is what I have) for a decent price.

I usually don't find them under 200... and i'm just wondering if you think I should get them! my cats are very possibly from the original manufactured date (21 years old), and I do not have any warning lights on (anything else i should look for?) would I notice ANYTHING from getting the new cats? I would want to paint them with some high heat paint.. maybe red!! (but that's besides the point...)

yah what you are seeing is what you are saveing form the list price. and you would not see any diffrince in replaceing them cause that are just stock replacements, not a performance upgrade

I'm takeing a guess that your 88' has the same set up as my 86'. Magnaflow has a cat that they concider universal. It has two 2" pipes that enter the cat and one 2.5" pipe exiting. If you take the stock cat off the first pipe and save the flange you are good to go. Everything lines up nice nice, I welded mine on be cause that's how I roll but you could use coupleings and clamps if you not concerned about looks.
Off the top of my head I can't remember how many o2 sensors you have on the 88' but mine on the 86' only has one and it is on the first pipe before the cat witch allowed me to get rid of the second cat with no problems ECU. The magnaflow number for an 88' is #53006 front and if you have an o2 sensor between the two cats the rear cat is the same number # 53006.
Hope this help's, it worked great for my truck and with out all shit in the bottom of the cats they weighed about half as much and made every thing run smoother. GOOD LUCK!:icon_welder:

lmao wow guys... guess it was later than i thought it was when i was looking...

i guess the green maybe fooled me? anyways, i was really hoping they were that much, cats are so darn expensive.

wouldn't i find at least a slight increase since it's a brand new part? i mean if i replace a really dirty air filter with another of the same exact brand i expect a slight difference, maybe not noticeable to the human eye, but it's going from dirty to clean, i would expect at least a restoration to the original performance.

If you want to use factory direct it's gonna be wicked expensive, at least from my experiance. Magnaflow is not the only universal cat out there, their a ton of cheaper ones, I just perfer Magnaflow.
I guess it boils down to if you want to build your own or buy one done for you.:icon_thumby:

just punch them if you can still use the pipe you have have an 88. you will have no cel and for emissions they dont tail pipe test that old of a truck

let's mention that i don't have any experience in auto work, or welding, or fabrication. and not sure the people i know have welder(s) either.

so i'm gonna say we are probably going to go with a OEM model... unless someone near wants to work on it for me, or if someone wants to fab it up for me and ship it to me!

i dont understand why you need new cats can you explain that plz because i think your just waisting money

Because if it came with catalytic converters from the factory, it needs to have them. Federal Law.

and i feel like i should at the very least get a restoration of power since it's basically a filter correct? over time it is bound to get clogged, and it can't hurt changing the filter out.

and i like the environment the way it is, aka i don't want it any worse.

punching your cats isnt going to make the environment any worse save some money and punch them and live life

You bet your ass it makes a difference in emissions.

I like the air I breath, and wouldn't mind it staying the way it is for a while yet!
