Sports car technology in a humble little truck

Seems like everyone with a 3.0 likes those 4.10 gears. I'm going hunting in the junkyards this spring.

I chose to purchase new gears from Motive Gear. My friend, who has a shop a mile from me and who installed them, said they are the best as far as ease of installation and adjustment. Got them from CARiD. I also had him change the 3.73's in my Lightning to 4.10's as well. What a beast that thing is now. Damn Skippy!

Wasn’t sure how that would be with the 3.0 and 4R/5R trans. For sure it turned the mushy A4LD to a crisp snap but short of a bang. Gone was the mushy, sloppy shifts common to the A4LD. Didn’t change shift points really, dunno if that’s an option, I was only concerned with the A4LD and there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of options for those. Good to know that it’s a worthy improvement to those too.

Well, I do have a JET chip on the computer that raises the shift points. But my truck likes being manually shifted since I have a CAI with a very large tube connecting the MAF to the TB. Takes higher rpms to get the velocity in the tube up, but man, once it's up, it revs to the moon and back.

HOT air intake.

There was a reason manufacturers started ducting the intake from the fender/grille area into the carb.. rather than having the carb draw air from inside the engine bay.

Hot air doesn't create as much power as cold air.

The benefits of this design have been common knowledge since.... everything had carbs. I'm sure the first cold air intake (again.. one that draws its air from OUTSIDE THE ENGINE BAY) was probably utilized in the 1970s.. probably even before, if it was a sporty model.

He's got a ram air scoop on his hood pulling cold air down onto the intake filter. It's actually a pretty neat Idea.

That may be the case, but his motor is still undoubtedly seeing higher IAT's than one with a factory Intake. Higher IAT's = less timing = less power.

The design of his intake IS less restrictive than the factory one, which probably allows for a 5hp gain in an rpm range nearing Nascar territory.. but its losing him more torque than it's gaining HP.

Wouldn't need the 4.10s if it wasn't for the hot air intake.

It's ironic really... thread about sports car technology on trucks... cold air intakes...

1975 camaro, sports car, cold air intake.

1975 k10 pickup, draws hot air from engine bay.

Even back in 75 we knew.

Your 100% correct. However, an aftermarket intake setup doesn't always draw in air from the engine bay.

I have an aftermarket intake for my mustang that goes though the inner fender, so the filter inbetweent he fender and inner fender.

You can also do something like this with an intake box that seals to the hood and pulls air from outside the engine bay as well.

The interior is almost spotless, too. I have a huge front sway bar and a tiny rear one and I have to look and see what gears are in the back

I tried to click like several times but I guess you can only click once. The flareside short bed with a regular cab makes for one sporty truck. That Edge is immaculate too.

About how much did those gears cost?

You do not know that for sure.

Likely.....sure..

You have to check.

You can measure the intake air temperature and data log with minimal investment.

Like I always tell people, the stock intake IS a cold air intake. Get a K&N replacement filter and call it good. Unless the aftermarket intake has a box to seal off the filter from the engine heat, it is a HOT air intake.

Best mod I did was trading the Sport Trac (with a blown head gasket) on a 2020 Ranger. Turn the traction control off and give it the boot and the back tires break loose at 35 mph when the turbo gets spooled up. :headbang:

Hot air intake crawling in traffic....or slow wheeling.

Once your moving it changes

They are not all the same....a restricted cold air intake is still restricted. And yes some systems are horrifically restricted. Even amongst ranger generations....only because of calibration.....or tune.

And highway speeds there are resonance and pulse factors.

Noise....the elimination of it costs. The best balance of the 50 state machine is exactly that. It is jack of all ..and master of none .... But usually just peachy.

So tuning to your specific general conditions can make quite a difference....or be a wasted effort.

For a stock ranger. I don't change anything. Not worth it. I will Reroute the inlet to a snorkel if it sees off road duty....and usually only when needed at that...a 2wd I wouldn't touch at all until the box is fragged....and then a hot air intake, as that is simpler....and dont cost any power cruising...and not enough to care about otherwise .

A modern supercharged mustang leaves 50 HP locked up that just a comparatively "hot air" intake swap from the stock cold air....and of course that requires a tune as well to get there...but it is there. And that tune will kill the engine with a stock intake .

That is a fact. A repeatable fact.

Of course ..some say that is an Easter egg left for the willing to utilize ... And ...yeah I can see that as it takes it just outside of initial epa certification sometimes.

But that is a crazy amount of power...Before that ...only the jeep 4.0 has more then 20 HP that I have seen dead repeatable .. with tune and intake....

I have a car here I will take a pic in a min ....
