sport trac to a ranger

^^ you almost have it all right. more then most.^^^

the dumb ca smog laws are:
1, must be the same year or new motor from the same manufacture.
2, motor can come from a different model of vehicle but not from a "heaver" type of vehicle. IE: can go from a mustang to a ranger but not a 1/2 ton F1 to a ranger.
must transplant everything "smog related" from the cats, type of fueling system (like charcoal can) and everything else that’s on the motor from the factory.
3, trans are open for any.

there whole thing is that a newer vehicle is suppose to be a cleaner running vehicle so that’s what they want. when they open the hood, they want to see it as the vehicle where the motor came from with out any mods so they can not tell the different.
after you get it checked out through the state ref., they will put a new "motor" ven number tag on the vehicle and it gets register with that number. from that point on, you can just go to any smog shop as needed.
One of the problems with state refs. Is that you have to pay each time you go and most of them will change or add things for you to do each time you try to go. It takes at least 3+ times before you could even think about passing. Once you go and you don’t pass, your label as a “gross politer” they revoke you reg. and you have to go to the DMV and get a “temp. pass” sticker you have to put on your car if you want to still drive it. The temp pass are good for about 3 months.
It really does suck in soca. Be very careful to not let the smog nazi (CARB) come in your state.

Can the mods of this board move this to “other swaps” I am new and this may have been posted over there.

yep, i am an emissions inspector for salt lake county, which is in the top-5 most strict, non-cali emissions counties. in fact we share many regulations with cali. i put an efi chev 350 into mine without cats or any emissions equipment. if not for my connections and certain friends of mine outright breaking of the law it would never have flown.

as far as engine swaps go you guys actually have it better than us. because any and all 4.0 swap into an '80s rbv is technically illegal. because it was never an option in that model year for that model (not weight class) and it doesn't even need to be the same manufacturer. for example a 1995 vtec honda 1.8 could be swapped into a 1988 bII so long as all smog equipment the vin of the vehicle (not engine) calls for is present. and the fact that they offer you a different identification # would be the kind of "variance" i was talking about in my first post. and if there is more smog equipment it is not a fail so if it called for a cat and an egr but the newer engine had both those and an air pump it would still be acceptable

but the 4.0 always passes better than an older 2.8 or 2.9 and on a visual inspection it is a v6 and the inspector is not required to check casting #'s if the # of cylinders is the same, and it has all required smog equipment

either way it sounds like you have all of your ducks in a row and i think you should do it, do it, do it!!

well i guess i have something to be thankful for.
in ca, if you get caught with your smog stuff not on, your truck will be impounded and you will be getting up to $1500.00 find for EACH infraction.
i had a friend that messed around with his registration and had his truck as a diesel ford Currier. it really was a ranger cab on a currier frame with a 550 hp V8. got pulled over and it cost him more then 20K in fees and fines (lawyer) to get it out.

i think most of the smog laws are good, but CARB is a nazi organization. what they just did to all our cats is a F&CKEN joke.

i think they should do all the testing and if it passes, leave us alone. were not polluting so don’t look.

they even have these old white faded vans that they park on onramps with sensors they put out to snif your tail pipe when your on the gas hard to get up to speed. if it is over a certain limit, it takes a photo of you and sends you a letter requiring you to bring it in or crush it.

yeah, at least here it is left to the independantly owned/operated emissions shops. you have to give a cop a good reason (and by that i mean really piss him off) to start searching for smog stuff. i was caught spectating in my camaro at the streetraces (no cats, no mufflers, no air pump, no egr, nothing) they went over my car with a fine tooth comb they cited me for my slicks, no front license plate, not wearing a seatbelt (i was parked!), and window tint. but they still did not even look for any emissions controls, nor did they notice that i had done an engine swap of a big block into a 1997 camaro.

its stupid because we have neighboring valleys that are so rural that there is literally zero emissions laws, no inspections or anything but since salt lake county has the "inversion" (google "salt lake air inversion") our laws are strict as hell ,

sorry for hijacking your thread

hey cammeddrz i know your not in ca. but i had a question about cats. i had to cut my "Y" pipe to twist them a bit to fit a "I" beam truck ( motor came out of a "A" arm sport trac. i also had to cut in-between the 2 big cats and twist it a bit to fit also. will a ca state ref not let it pass?

just a update on my project: still on hold for the steering box and pump to come back from tommy lee. just got off the phone with him and they just finished boring and porting out the pump. the box is ready. should pick it up tomorrow.

got my new steering box back and put in. he heat treated some parts in it and did some tweaking on it. it should be able to hold up to the pounding of the equal length "I" beams and cross over steering with the dana 44 hubs runing the 35" tires good. now. the last one lasted me since 91. that the last time it was in for service.

still running the 33" tires and just got in 4 new BFG ATKO thanks to my racing connections.
motor is going in today. stopped by the shop and it is almost in.

I will try to work on pictures on this site maybe this weekend. Don’t have much time to mess with that

still looking for a good set of coated headers. it sucks doing all this work and have stock pipes.

sorry i sent you a pm back but i should have posted it here too

as long as they are there. where you cut them and how you turned them should not make any difference.

^^^... got it. i hope were both are right....^^^

got the motor in its new home. it is all bolted up. the auto fab mounts fit good. nice and solid.

i had to remove the access plate to the wiper linkage because the intake manifold was just kissing it. i may just leave it off or make a new plate that has a little dimple in it.

i do have a little problem with the power steering pump. when i had tommy LEE MFG re-work it. i had him put a -6 AN fitting for the return line. well it points down at the bracket and there is not enough room. may have to remove the connector and have a custom hose made to my power steering cooler.

its been a while and i think i am going to try to post some pict. i hope they show up.

currently working on the drive shaft. my old one had a slip yoke and the new one has a u-joint. the length is the same, yea. working on the power steering pump. i had LEE MFG tap and thread a -10 going back in the pump and i am having problems getting it all to fit in there.
working on the fuel lines. one good thing is that this motor only has one line from the tank so i can take out the old return line. and the newer motor only has 1 pump so i can remove the one on the frame
found the "pats" box behind the passenger air bag. now i am going to mount the one and only key i have to the box so i can still use my old key's.

i haven’t posted in a while. been a little lazy and waiting on some friends to finish up some welding. will post some pictures up soon.
had to modify my cross over (the engine) support tubes. finished welding up the new plate for my fuel cell. i cut the stock quick release things off the stock tank and welded them on my new plate. had to have a friend tig them on with a silicone/bronze rod (dam stock sheet metal). this way when i go to the state ref. he will see all the factor things mounted to my cell and hopefully pass that part.

hooking up the winters gate shifter was a little tricky. the 5r55e trans. but i think i got it.
question: what does the charcoal can. look like on these motors? and what is that rectangle plastic thing that comes from the tank to the charcoal can?

Slightly off topic, but I've heard that you can run the 4.0 SOHC on an OBD-1 computer. I don't know if that would be emissions legal in Cali but its doable and some guy over at "seriousexplorations" did it.

Wiring in a new engine isnt that bad, you just have to separate the old body harness and leave it alone, and just connect what is needed for the new engine. No need to try to rewire the complete truck with the new wiring.

I hope you saved the new dash harness, cut off the square plugs and splice them into your body connectors for ignition and gauges and whatnot, that way it will still be plug-and-play if you remove the engine.

P.S. if its that old of a truck, would they even try to hook the OBD computer up? I'd tuck the test connector away somewhere and I'm guessing you wouldnt use the new gauges anyway, but if you do then remove the CEL bulb haha

this truck is gonna be a blast out in the desert with the new motor man post vids up once she runs

25+ beat the heck up wiring is in the truck now. with the new motor gives me the reason to just rewire it.

i hope to get it up so i can go prerun and chase with it for this years baja 1000. this year they are going all the way down to La paz. don’t think i will make it. the guy i am talking with to wire it up is finishing up one race car, has one truck to do then mine. never know. gives me time to do the extra things like adding more sound deadener and make a new sub box, repaint the inside.

had to drop the truck to the bumps to check new plung on the drive shaft. had to shorten the front shaft a bit.
then i had to drop the front down to make sure the beams cleared the new oil pan. check, all good there. thats what 20" front and 27" travel looks like.

question for the ford wrenches out there.

the computer wires are only long enough to get to the fire wall. i was thinking of making a box that is completely sealed and cutting a hole in the firewall into the cowl area and mounting it there. on the gen 1 rangers, that area will be exposed to rain, dust and what not. would it be ok to have the computer in a sealed little box or will i have condensation/venting/heat issues?

option 2, would be to lengthen the wires so i can mount it in the cab. a few wire guys i have talked to don’t want to touch that so i would end up doing that.

option 3, use the sealed box i made and try to mount it in the engine area.
