Split-Pin Front Brake Calibers on 94 Ranger

Greettings Folks!

I need some help on removing the front brake calibers on my 94 Ranger. Sorry if this in the archives but I searched the site and can't find it.

How do you take out the "split-pins" that hold the caliber in place?

Whatever you have that fits in the hole and a hammer. I have a long piece of keystock that works perfectly.

I use a large-ish flat screw-driver, tap one edge inwards so the divot clears, then tap the other edge to clear and then it should be easy to punch it threw. You could also squeeze the end together [vise grips] and then tap in with a hammer, then use a hammer and screwdriver.

I second the flat-head screw driver. Once the pin has recessed in, angle the screw driver down to the lower 'V' and lightly tap it out. Works great.

Those split-pins sure do seem like a silly design to me :icon_confused: Does anyone know why they would be used instead of bolts?
 
yeah me and my buddy normally just use a decent sized punch and a bfh... the bfh isn't needed, but you don't have to swing that many times that way!

I'll guess something to do with vibration as there is rubber between the two metal halves, but I don't know.

Do I punch both halves out together at the same time?

I have a 94 manual on CD and it says to hit the split-pin first at an angle of 45 degrees and then punch it straight out.

It has a drawing but it doesn't show the point where the punch meets the pin. I don't know what it means to hit it 45 degrees.
 
Take it for what it's worth, but after I had one come out on me, I started replacing them each time. You can get them at Autozone relatively cheap.
 
The ends of the pins are sorta like <0> There is a little tab on the outside of them that you have to push in to push it through the caliper. If you hit the pin at a 45 degree angle on the outside of the vee it helps to clear it. The vice grip suggestion is what I've used, just squeeze in on the outsides a little and lock the pliers. Then use the suggested hammer and screwdriver. Put the screwdriver on the end of one of the vees and tap it out.
 
Wow...thanks RobertC! You should have written that manual. You said more to explain it to me than the manual's pictures and instructions.
 
It does work, I think some yota's have split pins also. Not any better than breaking a seized bolt on a chevy, how many have had that happen?

Is this all done from the front of the caliber?
 
Two things someone related to this thread....

First, it is a CALIPER PER PER PER. Caliber is a measurement of size. CaliPER is a thing that goes around the sides of something.


Second, since this is a brake setup that was used on all rangers up to 1994, how is it 3.0 related?

Put an extension on the side, tap it with a hammer on each side until it lodges in, and pops through


And yes, Robert's method is done from the outboard side.
