When you unplug it the CEL will come on & the engine should die or be real close with the rpms being extremely low.
Having the similiar problem with my 2000 3.0L. Runs better in morning. Runs like crap in afternoon. Been worse lately as temp has been over 90 in Ohio lateley. If I put it in gear shortly after starting it bucks. If I let it idle for a few minutes it is better. Under acceleration it buck and misses.
Have used 2 different scanning tools and neither show any codes. Doesn't even register the mis.
My brother had a similar problem with his E-150. Scanner did not register anything. Turned out to be a bad coil. (COP) type.

You are different then the poster. You have a snycronizer were the distributor was, and most likely you are getting a belt like squeal that sounds like it is comming from the back of the engine. No Codes, Mis-fires over 2500 RPM and belt like squeal are signs pointing to the syncronizer shaft failing.
The Fuel Pressure is where it needs to be I got a friend that can plug into the computer and see if we can find anything out.
