I have pulled the brakes, rotor and wheel bearings off. With all this off and axle sticking through the spindle I am able to grab the axle end and move it up and down and side ways. It's just a little slop. Is this correct? Or is the spindle bearing needing replacement??

The spindle itself shouldn't have much play at all. Not real sharp on front end stuff, but I'd be willing to guess you have some wear there somewhere. There are no "spindle bearings" other than wheel bearings. If the spindle is loose when the wheel bearings are installed they can be adjusted in most cases.

This is totally normal. The spindle bearing is designed to support the inner part of the stub shaft next to the seal. The outer part of the shaft is guided/supported by the hub. So with the hub off it's normal to have play at the end of the shaft.

If you keep the spindle bearing well greased it will last forever.

Yup. Normal to have slop. The slop goes away when you install the hubs and the shaft is supported at both ends.

4X4 spindles have bearings, a torrington bearing it should be smooth to spin . I just replaced both fr wheel bearings my drivers spindle and the spindle (torrington )bearing.

there are a set of needle bearings on the back side of the spindle. But you won't be able to tell the condition of them without pulling the spindle off. The slop you are seing is cause the hub is off. The Hub actually has a bearing in the end of it that supports the end of the axle shaft. Depending on the age of your hubs its either some sort of roller bearing, but i think that warn now makes them with basicly just a bronze bushing.

I should have the spindle off Sunday and will see what we have.

Thanks for the info guys.
