spec size tires, why do we avoid them?

So I took a picture of the door sticker on my truck for researching the rear axle and happened to notice the original tire size is 235 x75 R15 SL. On there now are 31x10.5 R75.

Speedometer seems to be spot on, at 65 mph I'm barely breaking 2000 RPM.
I have to do something soon, one of the tires is a bumpity thump out of round kinda tire,

I'm seriously thinking of going back to the original size, cost alone is a good reason. Is there any argument to go with the larger tires other than they "look great? ". If and when I ever get to 4WD working the most I've ever do is probably Forest roads.


235 vs 31s. Is like a 2in difference in diameter!

Just a guess here but I would say "looks cooler" and more aggressive tread patterns

I will admit, the 235 on a steel spare rim I have, looks rather feeble next to a 31x10.5 and I'm not into all that Bigfoot impress everybody to impress yourself type of thing.

My ’92 has stock 235/75R15s on it. When I was planning to keep it, I wanted to put 31s or 33s on it pretty bad, only for aesthetics. But I looked into it and up to ’92, you couldn’t do it without a lift. As I understand it, starting in ’93, you could go up to 31s.

The 235s will prolly be better in snow, since they’re skinnier. Do you have rims for them?

Here's a pic of the truck as she is now with the 31s. I would assume 235 would fit the deerfoot rims,. I found another tire place not far from me I'm going to check them out next week.

Done for looks, no need for them. Example of what used to be big. 69 Mustangs and Fairlanes with 350-400 hp came with F70-14's, biggest tires made. That translates to 225/60-14 in todays world.

Yeah, I’m not sure if the 235s would fit on them or not. Seems likely, I guess. Surely, someone here knows. Mine are on stock steelies (see my avatar photo).

They fit, it's because my other truck had mismatched 235s and I had 265s put on, Same wheels

Funny, it was a 93 4WD long bed and the door sticker called for 265 75 R15 I don't know how Ford comes up with these sizes because the extended cab models are actually much longer 126" wb, long bed is 114"wb

the smallest tire i can feasibly run is a 33.


a 235 85 16 is livable if i am not on 70-80 mph freeways as primary driving.


my vehicle fits tires from 44 in to 33 in.


i drive with the smallest cheapest tire on the road when possible.


if i can...winter tires for winter....and a/t for the other 2 months of heavy mosquitos..



if you are 95 percent road...i would run the oem style tire just to keep total costs down besides just tires.

Go to tire rack and look at the tire tool... for the size you want it will tell you preferred wheel width. Those wheels you have a 7 inch wide

I would stay away from P metric tires.. those are intended for passenger cars.

Afterall… it's still a Ranger and you plan on doing some light truck stuff.

I couldn't bring myself to go to 235's... the 31 x 10.5 x 15 is a really good fit on factory Rangers like yours.

31x10.5 fits the wheels perfect far as I can see. NOT getting changing wheels anyway.

I didn't say anything about changing WHEELS...

Rusty I believe said he didn't know if 235's would fit... go to tire rack and check the recommended wheel size for the tire you want to purchase. Simple.


And yes Denise P metric tires are intended for pass car use. They're cheap and people buy them because they're cheap. you have a light truck and I believe the SL designator at the end of the tire size on your sticker is a load rating... you won't find that on a true P metric tire

235,265,31/75 all fit 7"w rims.
Don't wan no "P' on my tires!
