So, a few years ago when i first got my truck and started upgrading it, one of the first things i upgraded was the intake to a aftermarket "cold air intake"...

Now that ive been working on it for a few years and know a heck of a lot more, I've been fixing a few things i screwed up....the CAI being one of them

The intake i have now looks cool, and makes a loud vroom.....but there really are no noticeable performance increases [suprise!] and the big kicker: when i go mudding, it has a bad habit of sucking up water super easy, ive killed the engine before, and currently im having to clean the hot wire on teh air flow sensor yet again...

to replace w/ stock is pretty pricy [$280ish]...thats more than i payed for this aftermarket one! :annoyed:

QUESTION: Has anybody had any luck with a aftermarket air box set up for offroading? specifically for a 03 mazda b3000 [if not i should be able to mod]

OR

just bite the bullet and buy a new stock one and throw it back in there?

p.s. if anyone looking for a ricer looking CAI, im ur guy...lol

I dunno why everyone thinks the factory setup is so awful. It is shaped the way it is for a reason and the throttle body is still going to be the biggest restriction in the system.

yea along with a whole list of why CAI really dont do too much....

guess i was under the impression shiny meant faster

volant does a sealed box that attaches the fender, or behind the headlight (whatever the stock location is) so you have the benefit of a big cone filter with a a big inlet tube, but not the water sucking properties.

Go to a junk yard???
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Ya I'm sure they just about give away air boxes at junk yards, I wouldn't even consider buying new for something like that.

The stock airbox isn't immune to water intrusion either... if you commonly run in much water you may want to scope out the tech library for more options.

all good suggestions...will investigate the tech library more throughly.

ive scoped out the local pick and pull and they lack my particular model and those tht are left are pretty picked over.....but i might find one that i can mod

hrmmm...thx guys, you've gotten me off to a good start...plenty to chew on

Seriously? 3.0s and 2.3s are the most common ranger engine, they share the same airbox, obviously the tube itself is different though. Seems odd that you cant find any. There shouldnt be a difference since yours is a mazda if thats what you mean..

I sucked water once. Ripped all that crap out, plugged the vac line, and left it at the hole in the airbox. The truck body keeps the splashes out, and the hole in the box is higher than the stock intake spot. It also removed the HAI... runs a hell of a lot better since then, and makes that "vroom" type sound.

Except that day I managed to forget I had the air filter on the tailpipe and kept on wheelin... if anyone finds a purolator pureone for a ranger out in the pines, let me know haha. (and throw it away, I don't want trash out there)

EDIT: just my humble opinion... hasn't failed yet. YET.
