I down shifted Saturday and when i let out the clutch it made a noise like gears not meshing together. If I take it easy I can move the truck but as soon as the RPM goes up a little it slips and grinds. Trans was rebuilt from a member From TRS clutch is about 5 years old but I had 327 gears with 12 x 35 tires. Put JY differentials on it last fall with better gears 376 LS. I haven't torn it appart yet because my wifes Explorer had the long brake line go Sunday. I would like to have an idea what it is so I can check on parts so they are ready when I work on it. It is a 92 STX 4.0 6 in lift with a 2 or 3 in body lift. Any ideas would be helpful.

Auto or manual? Either way, sounds expensive if it starts to slip and grind with any speed.

Uh oh. Scorched counter shaft.

Good catch adsm08...he has a clutch so he must have a manual tranny. That's a good logical call...and your degree of sarcasm is classic, too. You win a troll lollipop. Now can you help him with his question?

Tore up a synchro gear? Perhaps a shift fork has come loose on the shift shaft and the gear isn't fully engaged?

Well it sounds like some of you think it is the transmission. I got a rebuilt trans from another member last year so I'm thinking the parts you mentioned went bad?
I thought about responding with a smart ass answer to the guy that asked if it was manual or stick but decided to not anger some one that was trying to help. I don't know what the counter shaft is so I'm assuming it is in the trans?

Asked if it was manual or auto cause I missed your mention of the clutch in your original post...old eyes do crazy things looking through bifocals.

The manual trans has 3 shafts in it. There is the input, output, and counter. The input and output are two separate pieces, but they are in line with each other, and form what is called the main shaft.

When you spin two gears against each other the driven gear spins counter to the drive gear. The way most cars are setup that would produce a transmission that lets you go really fast backwards.

If you add a third gear to the mix it begins spinning in the same direction as the input gear.

In a manual transmission like the M5OD the input gear is driven by the engine, the counter shaft sits below it, and spins counter to the input and output shafts (hence the name "counter shaft"), and the counter shaft in turn spins the output shaft. There is one gear on the input shaft, many machined in as one piece to the counter, and then as many spline on to the output shaft, which are then locked in by the shift collars to engage a given gear. This is true in all gears except fourth, where a collar just locks the input and output shafts together into one piece.

If you stripped the counter shaft you will lose all gears except 4th, so a quick way to test that is to jack up the rear and see if 4th is still going strong.

Anyway, you will have to pull it out and inspect the guts to know anything for sure.

tmcalavy, I know what you are saying. I'll be 60 this Sept. I have progressive lenses so it's the same just doesn't look like they are.
adsm08, thanks for the explaination, the only thing missing were pictures and I could probably find those in the tech section. I think I tried it in 4th gear when I was trying to get it home when this happened but I'm not sure. Before I start taking it apart I'll try 4th. If it does it in 4th does that mean there is something else wrong?

If it does it in 4th there may still be issues with the counter shaft. The counter shaft never disengages from the input shaft, it just isn't loaded the same way in 4th since there is no power flow through it, it's just along for the ride.

I have an M5OD in my garage. I will see if I can get it out and pop the top, try to get some actual pics in the next few days. Problem is it's against the back wall and I am about to put a car in there for some major work. If I can't get it by mid-morning Saturday it will probably be a month or two until I can get to that trans again.

With my sons help we got the trans out and took the top off but didn't see anything bent or broken stuck a magnet in the bottom and no shavings? took the clutch off and found some parts rattling around and the coil springs are damaged so I'm pretty sure that is my problem. If anyone has any other ideas let me know,I don't want to tear the trans down if I don't have to. 20140517_181433.jpg If I did it right this is a picture of pressure plate and the spare parts from the clutch plate.

Um, that is a problem.

Do you think that is the only problem or should I look at the trans more. I looked at Rockauto and they have 5 clutch kits is a brand better than the others? Is it worth the price for a race or heavy duty clutch?
