i heard about mixing bondo/bondo-hardener, and fiberglass resin/fiberglass resin hardener. the guy called it "milkshake"

but at what ratios? and where is it used mostly?

hmmm, never heard of it, and I've used both bondo, and fibreglass resins. Did he say what kind of resin? Fibreglass can be done with different resins. Vinyl-Esther, Poly-Ester, and Epoxy. Vinyl and poly are cheap, Epoxy is spendy, but Epoxy is awesome.

What are you trying to accomplish? Filling body work? Doing fibreglass repairs? Building something new?

Most of the products I have used really frown on mixing with other products, as it does affect the final outcome, but I have played around with mixing slow and fast hardeners to create my own "speed" of hardener. This is with epoxy. There are ways of speeding up poly and vinyl esthers too, but Im not sure the chemicals are available to the general public. Business only I think.

What are you trying to accomplish?

i bought one of these:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-471510/

for my cold air intake that i built

and the hole in the hood it mates to (you can see the black cowl covering the hole):

i riveted and then fiberglassed the cowl part on. it just needs a good sand down and then a good skim coat of bondo to fill it in. i figured if you could mix bondo and resin it would stick to existing fiberglass resin with even less chance of cracking

I donno, bondo is pretty bad ass. I know they make a Fiberglass bondo, and a metal bondo, but dont know if you can mix those two together either.

Your best bet would be to talk to the people at the paint supply store that your prolly gonna buy your filler material from, unless your just getting it from the local auto parts store, in which case, they dont have a clue, and you will be reading the cans for awhile.

I use epoxy and polyester resin all the time and you never want to make what that guy called a milkshake, your best bet in the long run is to follow manufactorers instructions so you dont have to worry about delamination later on. I would use epoxy it bonds to metal if you prep the area well with some 80 grit and its stronger than poly and vinyl.

The milkshake tis guy is atlkin about is simply adding fiberglass resin to bondo to a consistency of a milkshake. Its used to help make larger fiberglass projects smooth. Stuf flike custom door panels and tings of that sort. If you use a good body filler int he first place your not gonna need help in making it smooth. Invest in a good body filler. I personally use Evercoat's Rage Gold. Ive used Bondo in the past and compared to this Rage Gold its a PIA.....the Rage is SO much easier to sand and work with overall.

You know, you don't even need to mix any fiberglass resin in with your filler. It may surprise you to find out that the hardeners used in body filler and in fiberglass are the same thing, just one is in liquid form and the other is in a cream-like form. If you sanded down your existing fiberglass work, you can fill right over top of it with no worries. So long as the fiberglass is cured (which I'm assuming it is as you've sanded it already) then you can go ahead and throw your polyester filler on top... if you've sanded it with too fine a grit though, you're not going to get good adhesion. P180 is my general rule of thumb, anything finer and you're going to have adhesion issues. I would honestly recommend 3M Platinum Plus filler if you don't already have some. Used to be Marson Platinum Plus... depending where you are/where you go it could be called either. Sands so nice and easy and will stick to pretty well anything with no problem.

i actually laid the fiberglass down on sunday, and plan to sand it all and cover it with filler this weekend (i work 12 hour days and an hour each way commute) i have a gallon can of bondo and the resin i used already.

all that does is create what we call gorilla hair.

but they sell it. its fiberglass reinforced filler. its great if you need to fill stuff in. then you use regular bondo over it.
