87 ranger 2.9/2wd 5sp.

Im 98% sure my intank pump quit. Im going to verfiy for sure before going any further (only thing i can think of is i had it on ramps and maybe the fuel went to the back of tank, why nothings coming out, but i also didnt hear anything and i believe there was 4 or 5 gallon in it)

Ok onto questions....

1- Trying to decide between pulling the tank or pulling the bed. The tank is dripping anyways (not bad) but my biggest worry is ripping sending unit wires. Is there enough wire there to drop the tank and unplug wires without messing them up?

2- I got a grey fuel line and a blue. Blue is supply and grey is return correct?

3- If i do pull the tank do the straps bolt ontop of tank to? Or just bottom? Ive only ever dealt with rear mount tanks.

4- If i unhook a wire from the frame pump so it wont dry run while im checking the intank pump...the intank pump will still run right?

1) I would drop the tank. If it is already leaking it should be replaced, and it can't be removed without going down. I was able to get a new Spectra unit, with straps, for under $100 a few years ago. There is enough slack in the wires to come down part way and get some room to work, but not to make it the whole way out.

2) I think that's right. I usually pull it off the back of the HP pump just to be safe.

3) The straps bolt to the frame on one end, and hinge at the other. Assuming this is the mid-ship tank, and not the aft-of-axle aux tank they bolt up in the middle and then can swing down and twist to come out. Inspect the area behind the tank for damage and corrosion issues. My old frame is in really bad shapes there.

4) Right. The two pumps are wired in parallel. They share a single power wire from the inertia switch to a connector in the engine bay, near the frame, under the brake booster. That single wire goes in one side, and two wires come out the other side. The pumps ground independently.

Im leaning more toward the tank now. Just cause id rather have to cut tank straps (worse case) then grind/replace box bolts. The straps look fine. Pry will replace them anyways. Oddly enough the underside of this truck is super rust free given what it is. So hopefully the frames fine behjnd the tank.
 
Also is there really a difference in the long box/shortbox tanks? According to certain parts sites there is.
 
From what I remember, the tank on my single cab Ranger was smaller. The one on my supercab extends quite a bit under the cab.
 
There is, the bigger tank is the most commonly available, so you are good there.

When I did my resto both tanks had the plastic nose cone thingy, and both had pinholes behind it where gravel had gotten in and rubbed through. If you have that piece on that's I probably the source of your leak, and not actual rust.

Im pretty sure mines leaking from the bottom under the strap.
