sold my ranger time for bigger an better

My grandfather has a '89 S-10 "Tahoe" std cab shortbox 4x4, 2.8 5-speed. He has had it longer than I have had my Ranger (12+ years) It has only needed an exhaust and tires until recently.

He basically got it to use as a street legal four wheeler when he was farming for $500, the body is pretty rusty but the cab is solid. It has been doing a lot of sitting since he retired in '03 and now the clutch won't engage (pushed the pedal to start it and the pedal didn't come back up) Up until then it was a fun little truck to drive, the digital dash is kind of a neat change of pace too.

The 2.8 in that thing is pretty spunky, doesn't seem to leak any worse than my 2.8 Ford did... and has required nothing since he has had it.

the 2.8 in my friends firebird was a decent motor until it decided to put in custom breather holes in the pan and block :icon_rofl:

I didn't buy it. I married its owner. And I'm giving it away.

Also, Ranger with 2.8, S-10 with 2.8. Same sized engine, same strength trans. Roughly same sized brakes. Roughly same wheel base, same bend length options, both only came in a regular cab that year.

Care to tell us how the S-10 is "bigger"?

Good bye. :thefinger:

Enjoy the new truck, hope it treats you well.

I suppose if you consider it this way.....around here, the S-10s seem to be "better" at rusting out than Rangers. They seem to be "better" at hiding, since the ratio of Ranger to S-10 sightings is way off the scale. They must also be "better" at taking up space in the local scrap/wrecking yards, too.
Maybe the "bigger" part is.....they're "bigger" pains in the backside?
Wrong, wrong, and uh.. wrong.
IMO Chevy's and Fords rust out equally. If anything the ranger will rust out more. Leaf spring hangars? Yeah, point made. Every truck has it's weak points.

The only reason why you see more Rangers is because when you drive something, it becomes active in your mind. Same as if you go look at a vehicle your thinking about buying. Before I got my Mazda B-series (pre-ranger) I never saw a single one driving around. Then BAM I'd see them every week. Same with the Zx2 and the S10.

I also see more Rangers in the local u-pull-it than I do S10's. My guess as to why, the S10 is taken immediately to the scrapper because no one wants those crappy parts. :icon_hornsup:

Any no, I'm not just saying the top two because I have an S10. Only reason why I have it is because I got a really good deal on it.

However, I would trade it for a 4.0, 4x4, super cab, and paint code EG Ranger in a heartbeat.

It's better for us...since he won't have a reason to stay on TRS anymore and talk about racing ricers.
I couldn't agree more.

The points I posted were just my take on things. I know that rust/corrosioin doesn't "target" any specific brand. That was the Ford-blue blood talking. Dad was a Chevy guy. I've had more Fords than any other. So, while not necessarily correct overall, my views aren't decidedly "wrong" either. Just my opinions.

It's all good, though!

i have to agree with the s10s rotting more than ranger, i dont see to many rusty rangers around here with the exception of the wheel wells on the bed side, every s10 i see is gone you can usually see through most body panels. there arent alot of s10s around here there are a couple of newer ones and the older ones have usually been completely redone and build for racing.

While a certain brand does not rust more certain designs do, it all depends on where panels overlap, and where salt/leaves will gather and begin rusting. Like most 80s/90s model f150 have rotten front fenders right at the bottom and almost all fullsize chevys from 88-97 are missing the cab corners or bottom of cab in the extended cab part of the cab

Wow... good thing I stuck up for ya right before you bail...

From my personal firsthand experience s10s suck the monkey balls.

.:thefinger:

f off.

I can't say what my experience is with S10's due to the fact saying good things or joking around makes them die. :annoyed:

i drove a early gen S-blazer with the 2.8/5speed. my '88 ranger 2.3 had more power. i do have a '97 S-blazer now, its what the wife drives. the 4.3 is in many ways better than the 4.0 ohv. both have their strong points and weak spots. you just have to pick the right "tool" for the job. for some things the S-blazer gets the nod, for others its the ranger. amazingly the blazer is better rust-wise than my ranger, despite having alot more miles and alot less care before i got it. (my dad owned it for 3 years and gave it to us) but i do prefer the 4wd system and suspention of my ranger better then the blazer. my daughter will no longer comfortably fit in the jump seats of the ranger, so the blazer has pretty much become the family vehicle and the ranger mostly just goes to work and back. i do have to laugh about a 2.8 S10 being bigger an better than a 2.8 ranger. thats like saying a stakeside childs wagon will haul more trash to the curb than a std non-stakeside radio flyer. they are both small trucks with a limited amount of available useage. i have seen a early (82?) S10 with a 4 speed, it was a std cab 2wd shortbed with the 4cyl. by the time V6's came out i think all had 5 speeds.

just don't do this

1. it hurts
2. the safety components tend to rust away first.
3. it only had one bolt securing the cab to the frame when it rolled
