So, brand new 2.9 engine, forced induction options?

I can still get you that cam and lifter set. It's the most aggressive cam you can run in a 2.9 without swapping to MAF.

+1, If you're planning on something like that, not going to MAF would be crazy - and it's not that expensive.

eh, MAF is a joke, there's nothing maf can do that MAP can't, even on forced induction.

fact of the matter is, if i have a good tune i only need the TPS and nothing else.

but beyond that, MAF is a bandaid solution to the problem of poor tuning, i've seen plenty of MAP based forced induction systems.

You COULD, but it would be pointless to mate an M90 to a 2.3 as 2.3 turbo manifolds are a dime a dozen.

I also would not boost a crate 2.9. If you wanted a supercharged 2.9, you would have needed to decide that BEFORE buying a motor. I would have gotten my hands on a good block, and called up Morana, then started from there. Since you already bought the motor - I'd buy a cam, springs, and read up here in the tech library about modding 2.9s. Just go with a mild build.

What he said!

If you have an in-house dyno and are capable of tuning your own stuff, there isn't anything wrong with speed density. Lots of high-dollar race-cars use it, but they run a different tune every day. It is not as practical for a backyard mechanic, but can be done just fine as long as you know what you are doing - and you can have a simpler intake setup.

i gots a question. why would you buy a brand new 2.9 when you know how easy and cheap a 4.0 is for our trucks?

because a used 4.0 cost as much as a new 2.9 and i'd rather not use a junkyard engine.

actually let me clarify:

if i got a 4.0, i'd need a new computer, new wiring harness, convert the dash to work with the new computer, and a new transmission.

or, i could just get an engine that plugs straight in and be done with it, and have a not-used engine to boot.

A new 2.9 costs a few hundred bucks? Shoot!

by the time i'm done changing everything around to make a 4.0 fit and not break stuff, i'd spend more than 'a few hundred bucks'

Your best bet would be an aftermarket standalone like Megasquirt. It will allow you to tune it and would accept a wideband MAP or if you so choose, a MAF. It will also let you run a crank fired ignition instead of a distributor. Megasquirt is a good deal if you cant afford the higher dollar stand alone units and is adaptable to pretty much any engine build. :icon_thumby:

I know its not a 2.9, but I run a 2.0L turbo Subaru in my dune buggy. It runs a standalone ECU with a MAP and pushes 15psi of boost. A MAP can be used, but your computer will have to accept a wideband reading.

Well I figure you are spending more than a few hundred on a new 2.9?

I'll be doing it the supercharged way, since i've got a friend with an M90.

that said, what do i need to do on a zero mile motor to get it ready for a supercharger?

i'm not going to be running massive boost, just something to pep it up a little bit.

shooting for at least 220hp.

is that attainable? will it break the engine?

Why not put in a newer 4.0 motor? Close to the same hp. That is just a lot of money to put in a BII and to have issues later on, plus...it is a lot of work to pipe all the plumbing correctly. Now...if it a true bolt on item and no running extra this and that and it only takes a short time to install it that would be nice....but that never really happens. Everybody I know who has put on a blower or turbo has always had some stupid annoying issue that drove them crazy and then they were never happy with it!! If you take it to a shop that can do it....that would be the best idea. The shop can correct and adjust any issues with the set up as they go along with the install!!!

about 1250 for the engine.

i'd spend more than that converting everything to play nice with the 4.0, because i refuse to do anything half assed or take shortcuts.

if the 4.0 swap doesn't look factory, it's not getting done, basically.
