sn 95 mustang axle swap

has anyone ever done this? im going to swap it to disk breaks and bigger fronts because im going to dump alot of power into it so i figure a mustang axle is a good choice, any insight would be great!

The Fox body Mustang guys have been using 2 long side Ranger axle shafts to convert to 5 lug... That means the Fox axle is wider then the RBV axle. The SN95 axle is even wider then that.

The 'Stang axle is set up for 4link/coil spring... Cut all the brackets off and weld on new ones.

The SN95 axle is still only 28 spline.

The Ex axle is close to the same width. Only needs spring perches and shock mounts welded on, (you could use a flip kit and 2 Explorer drivers side plates and its 100% bolt in.) and its 31 spline.

You tell me which sounds better.

well there is alot more options for brakes for the mustang axle haha i dont mind cutting and welding, im mostly worried about the e brake working.. plus i could $$$$wap it to a 31spline locker axle if needed...

not at all. i see them WAY more than stangs in the scrap yards. the sploder axle is disc and 31 spline already

The Explorer axle is the stronger unit, and if you really need brake options, the 2004-2009 Mustang brakes could probably be made to work by swapping backers.

Is this for the 91 Ranger in your profile? If so, the Explorer axle and the mustang axles will be a good bit wider than the stock axle, which may limit the amount of tire you can run without sticking out past the body.

The mustang axle also has the carrier located in the center, while the Explorer and Ranger axles have an offset carrier so that the driveshaft doesn't rub the fuel tank, so you'd have to figure out a way around that.

There are brackets available that will let you bolt Mustang brakes onto an Explorer rear axle, or the ranger 7.5 or 8.8.

If you want to run a decently wide rear tire, and don't want it sticking out past the bedside, you'll have to narrow the mustang or Explorer rear axles, but the explorer axle would be 31 spline, trac-loc, disc brake already, and would have the dif offset like your stock rear end. The only way Id use the Mustang axle is if you're going to use a 4 link, and move the fuel tank location. Otherwise, the Explorer or Ranger 8.8 is probably the easiest option.

well.. cant beat logic like that. guess ill work with a expo axle. any wright ups on how to do the swap? does it use the caliper for the e brake or miniature brake shoes like most rear disks ive seen?

There's literally hundreds of writeups, including both my builds. And ex axles are all over my yards, I could get about a dozen at 75 a pop, with any gear ratio you could ever want.

i would still like to have a working park brake hmm ill look more into this swap i think. a complete axle here is easily $150 in a yard

Why would you not be able to have a working parking brake?

Mine works, and my cable hook ups aren't even close to being correctly sized. I have a good bit m ore duct tape than I'd like involved, but it does work.

well if you cant duck it... guess im gonna head to the junk yard tomorrow and find a complete axle (hopefully) how weird is it gonna stop with stock ranger fronts and upgraded rears? the fronts are gonna get beefed up too but rears need it worse
